Dearest Chelsea,

I am writing this letter to you now to express what I have told you many times, yet wish I had told you more: I love you.

There are few people who made me feel as safe, as silly, and as seen as you did. I am so very grateful to have had you in my corner during what felt like some of the most challenging moments of my life, and I’m honored that you entrusted me enough to share some of your life’s pains with me too.

I will miss sharing the same space as you whether that is CRG, a cafe, my porch, or your couch.

I will miss cooking meals for you. The moments where you tactfully dropped hints that you were hungry so that I would joyfully make you some food…

I will miss climbing with you, and dancing with you, and hugging you… I will miss hugging you the most.

I wish I could have watched you grow old and open up that bar you always talked about with the line dancing and country swing.

I wish we could have gone on that camping trip we talked about going on together.

I wish we could have photographed more events together.

I wish we could keep going on our walk-and-talks.

There is a Chelsea-shaped hole in my heart, and I don’t know how to fill it…

I will try to honor your memory by living more joyfully, enthusiastically, and compassionately. I’ll do my best to not let your death harden my heart, but to help me soften into the man worthy of your love and friendship.

I will love you. All of you. Every day.

This is one of my favorite photos I shot back in 2019. I was hired to photograph a July 4th event for a nightclub in Burlington. I was standing on a bench right next to this group of people, and no one even noticed I was there...

When I first started shooting events and weddings, I was pretty self-conscious and definitely struggled with the spotlight effect. I didn’t want to be annoying, in the way, or bother people, and my photography suffered as a result.

But eventually, thanks largely to practice, I came to realize how little people are aware of anything around them. In fact, I generally have to put in a lot of effort to get someone to pose for a group photo because people are so caught up in their own experiences.

David Foster Wallace said it best: “You’ll stop worrying what others think about you when you realize how seldom they do.” Turns out he was right. And my photography got a lot better once I learned that lesson.
