We specialize in solving creative marketing problems and helping business owners accomplish their goals. I'm passionate about providing high quality creative services to small, local businesses and brands. I can design the logo, website and everything in between that your business needs to succeed, then I can take photos of your team in action. I’m not here to do work that doesn’t need to be done or sell you services you don’t need. Part of my responsibility as a professional is to help my clients make systematic, strategic decisions about their business; to develop solutions to problems. I make these services affordable and accessible to independent businesses and people who truly care about spreading good to the community through their products and services as much as I do.

But also, this is exactly why I love helping small business owners tell their stories online. Underneath the services and the posts and the “what do we even say on social media?” conversations, there’s usually something really human there. Extracting that good content out of people is such a fun challenge.

I have the best little set of social media clients right now, and I’m honestly a tiny bit bummed I can’t take on more work at the moment — but hopefully soon. 💛

Hi there, friends!! I’ve realized there are a bunch of new people here, so I should probably introduce myself again.

I’m Sarah. I founded Gray Matters.

People usually find me because they need a logo or a website. And then somehow I end up helping them fix… everything else. 😂

We usually start by talking about branding and their website, but end up also cleaning up social media, figuring out why nobody is clicking the buttons they want people to click, troubleshooting random tech issues, or talking through a marketing idea they’ve had bouncing around in their head for six months.

This is honestly my faaaavorite part of my job, because I’m ultimately a lot more than just a graphic designer.

For the last several years I was running Gray Matters while also owning and operating Bear Dance H**p Company with my husband, Chris.

Running a restaurant and retail store for 7 years taught me WAY more about marketing than any class, book, YouTube video, or college ever could.

Because when you’re the owner, you’re also customer service, IT, social media manager, photographer, website editor, inventory manager, accountant, janitor, unofficial therapist… 😅

So when another small business owner tells me they’re overwhelmed, I don’t have to imagine what that feels like. I’ve lived it.

Gray Matters is now my full-time focus again, and I genuinely forgot how much I love fully immersing myself in this work.

I still design logos and websites! But honestly, I think what people hire me for is my brain.

I really like figuring out why something isn’t working. Sometimes it’s the website. Sometimes it’s the branding. Sometimes it’s social media. Sometimes it’s just that five different systems aren’t talking to each other and everyone’s making life way harder than it needs to be.

I guess that’s my niche now.
I help business owners untangle things.

Also… I somehow convinced an intern to join us, and she’s been absolutely killing it. I’m quietly hoping she’ll never leave. 😂 (jk, I actually tell her that during every meeting.)

This is actually a post about marketing strategy disguised as a post about AI 🤫

I know the internet wants us to pick between: “AI is the future” and “AI is destroying humanity” but I called my business Gray Matters for a reason so here we are. Come along.

Instead of water usage or copyright issues, my brain immediately goes to: Branding. Public perception. Trust. Differentiation. Communication. Things that are a lil more nuanced and not as widely discussed.

Because at the end of the day, most small business owners aren’t trying to save to world or establish world peace

We’re just out here tryna make a living. And that’s the conversation I wanna have.

Website hot take: Most small businesses don’t actually have a design problem. They have a “what the hell am I looking at?” problem.

It might look professional, but does it tell new visitors:
• what the business does?
• who it’s for?
• where it’s located?
• or what I’m supposed to do next?

Your website isn’t just there to look pretty. It’s there to do a job !!

And honestly, that’s why I enjoy website projects so much. Half the work isn’t design. Your website is often people’s first impression of you, so website design is all about figuring out how to make the business *make sense*

Small businesses deserve visuals that actually build trust. So I wanna try a new thing for a little while:

AKA: Human-Made Flyers (Not AI Slop™)

Because the amount of AI-generated event graphics and business flyers I’m seeing lately is starting to hurt my soul a little.

Not because AI = automatically evil. But because consumers are getting REALLY good at recognizing when something feels fake, cluttered, low-effort, or weirdly off.

Design = communication.

An AI-generated flyer may accidentally communicate things like:

- this business isn’t detail-oriented
- this event may not be well organized
- this brand cuts corners
- this business may not fully understand its audience
- the information may not be trustworthy or accurate
- this business is trend-chasing instead of authentic
- nobody carefully reviewed this before posting it

And to be so so honest… Most business owners using these tools probably don’t even realize that’s the impression they’re giving off.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but your website should not feel like a scavenger hunt.

People are lazy. (respectfully)

If they have to WORK to understand your business, they won’t. They’ll just leave.

This is one of the easiest fixes you can make — and it actually impacts whether people buy from you.
