With so many monarch caterpillars roaming the garden, spotting the chrysalis can be difficult. I’m crouched in front of likely plants, making my neighbors think I’m kinda weird. And then I opened the curtains yesterday morning and I could see this chrysalis hanging from a solar light. So many caterpillars. So many hiding spots.

Found these Christmas gifts in the garden. A pollinator garden is a year-round commitment in Southern California. Monarch Butterflies can and do over-winter in our climate. Sometimes you have to look long and hard to find them, but we have at least 5 large (5th instar) caterpillars and every day I see one make its departure from our garden.

About to have a new Monarch Butterfly in the Rancho neighborhood. Swipe to see the blurry pic I took on 11/30–when it entered its chrysalis. Took a long time to get to its Eclose day, but worth the wait.
Always amazes me the Monarchs that overwinter in our little pollinator gardens. Currently we have at least a dozen Monarch Caterpillars roaming our little garden. It’s delayed my routine of cutting back the milkweed but it’s such a joy to go caterpillar-peeping every day. 🐛👐

On my Butterfly bush, there is a ladybug who wasn’t successful in it’s transition to 🐞☹️
I know this because I check on it daily.
This golden ladybug sat beside it one day, maybe offering support. (My mind goes all kinds of creative places)
I’m not going to try to write anything lofty because
