Winter at Sardine Lake

The nearby resort is boarded up for the season. Rental boats have been stowed. The road to Sardine Lake in Northern California has long since been closed. The lake is now inaccessible except by snowshoe or snowmobile. But occasionally an adventurous hiker will complete the 4 mile round-trip trek. For those that do reach Sardine Lake this time of year, a serene experience awaits.

The lake is frozen solid, with wisps of snow covering the surface. The frozen lake sings a warbling melody on sunny afternoons—almost as if in protest—as the ice cracks and shifts ever so slightly. A lake that is usually dotted with anglers in kayaks and rowboats is now sleeping until springtime.
