Miss Virginia here has a message for the ladies on International Women’s Day.

Being a female doesn’t mean you can’t make it to the front. 🎀

I was a young woman who hadn’t yet fully grown into my self-confidence when my love of hounds took root. From the very first day, I never wanted to be a “female deer/coon/fox hunter.”

I just wanted to be a dog hunter. To make dogs that I was proud of. To be respected by those around me.

Every step I walked toward that goal was a step toward the woman I am today, at 40. Life with these dogs, walking within what has traditionally been a man’s world-it changed me.

It brought me out of my shell and taught me how to be assertive when needed.

It taught me that my emotional involvement with and deep love of these animals wasn’t a weakness after all. In reality, a lot of times it’s been “the secret sauce.”

It’s shown me my physical and emotional strength. And the hardest days taught me to not be selfish when it meant sparing them a single moment of suffering.

Most of all, every dog I ever hung my collar on has played a role in teaching me that I CAN do hard things. That just because someone says “you’ll never be able to do that” doesn’t mean you can’t prove them wrong.

Be a lady. Be prepared to have to work twice as hard to earn respect sometimes. Don’t expect special treatment. Love your dogs.

And watch this change your life 🖤

*I’d be remiss in failing to say that I’m eternally grateful for the houndsmen who took me under their wing, encouraged me, pushed me past what I thought were my limits sometimes, and always clapped the loudest even if my name was higher on the sheet than their’s. THANK YOU, for everything.

Intimidator is here to share my favorite Valentine’s Day sentiment with you 🥰

Remember, as long as you have a dog you always have a Valentine. Give the one(s) you love an extra hug from me today!

They went forward into the darkness with little regard for self preservation. Heat singeing their skin, sharp debris tearing at their paws, smoke making it harder and harder to draw breath.

They had no expectation of payment or accolades. Time and again they forged ahead, searching for signs of life. What they mostly unearthed instead was simply closure for grieving families and friends.

The search and rescue dogs of 9/11 are proof that there are some jobs that can’t be replaced by humans or AI. Our canine companions have served us since the dawn of time as protectors, hunting partners, silent providers of emotional support, and so much more.

How fortunate we are to still be the beneficiaries of their extraordinary natural instincts in the modern world.

Today I say an extra prayer and take a moment for reflection, not only for the human heroes and those who lost their lives that fateful morning, but for the dogs who plunged into the smoke and darkness without a second thought for their own safety. To serve us.

God bless dogs. And God bless America.

This one deserves to be shared again. Give your dogs a scratch, from me!

Another deer season has come around here in SC. The older I get, the faster they seem to come and go.

Folks, I want to be honest with you. Every year it becomes more and more critical for each and every one of us to be pristine stewards of our sport. We simply must do our best to be respectful and responsible in what we do if we want to continue doing it into the forseeable future.

Sometimes that may take what feels like some sacrifice on our part to keep the peace with the public. It’s going to take holding the bad eggs accountable instead of simply sweeping their actions under the rug. And it’s going to take putting the good of the sport above individual ego. Those may be hard truths, but they’re the truth nonetheless.

I was not able to hunt this morning, but I still said a prayer for every hunter and every hound heading to the woods. I hope each and every one of you enjoy the season, and please, take the initiative to represent our sport in the best way possible.

This is no longer something that can fall on the shoulders of a few.

Happy deer season 2024!

He is risen, indeed.

God has used hounds to teach me about faith, love, the power of prayer, and how to put my trust in Him over and over.

He sent me two foxhound puppies who would get me through losing my father and go on to change the course of my life.

He gave me a litter of puppies off of a cross I prayed for years I’d be able to successfully make. If that wasn’t enough, they entered the world on the week I lost the hound that was my very best friend-and they needed to be on the bottle for a week. Nothing could ever take the sting of losing my Waylon away, but having those pups to focus on was in retrospect a blessing.

He listened when I prayed day and night for one of my favorite hound, Chief’s, splenic mass to be benign. Two years later he’s still living in my house, healthy, happy, and carrying on where my heart dog left off. God knew I needed another one that was a “friend” like Waylon, and though I wish it hadn’t come about the way it did, He had a plan.

A year after that He helped me pull Chief’s brother Diesel through some issues that then raised concern his kidneys were failing. I’ve never been able to save a dog from kidney failure, but God was there for us again. Over a year later, my boy is still here-a little hefty, but by all appearances healthy and whole.

These are just a few examples from the last 7-8 years. There have been many more throughout my time with dogs (almost 20 years…where has the time gone?), but these are the ones that will always stick with me. I say “thank you” every day for these, what I consider to be, miracles. And when I’m faced with another challenge, I pray, and I have faith that God will see us through.

God deals with each of us in a personalized manner, I believe. He knew if he spoke dog to me I’d listen. Hopefully this will encourage you to listen too.

Happy Easter, everyone.

I always thought I was not born into a hunting family. I was, in fact, a first generation hound hunter as far as I knew.

When I learned that one of the Gaelic translations of my last name, O’Connor, was “lover of hounds,” it warmed my heart to know that somewhere on the Emerald Isle there was probably once someone (or many) of my blood who enjoyed riding to the hounds.

It’s fascinating to me to know that love of a fox dog resurfaced in me a number of generations later.

Maybe one day I’ll make it to Ireland and have the chance to experience fox hunting in the same places my ancestors followed their hounds. Today though, I was able to spend St. Patrick’s Day with my pack of dogs, good friends, and cold Guinness.

These Irish eyes were surely smiling.

“Madra Rua,” the Irish sometimes call the fox, though it truly means “red dog.” I don’t get the opportunity to photograph my own dogs as much as I’d like, but this is my “madra rua,” Baby Red ☘️

I can't remember a single time I've run this dog that I didn't step into his kennel upon putting him away, wrap my arms around him, and say, "Thank you for running for me today."

It's a silly habit to some, I'm sure, but he's had a special place in my heart since the day he came into this world, and I AM so grateful for every day in the field with him. He's the continuation of two dogs that meant very much to me, and my heart swells with pride every time I see him run.

A hound doesn't have to do what they do for us. We should always remember that their desire to work and the subsequent joy it brings us is a privilege.

Tell your hounds "thank you." They understand, even if you think they don't.

Sending a very special congratulations to Bridgette Clary and Beth Jenkins on CCH GRCH(3) 'PR' Skyline N Leeview DaretheDevil ("Lily") being named the bench show winner of the 2023 Purina Outstanding Coonhound award.

Fun fact, the artist used one of the images I took of Lily to craft her award painting!

Thank you for trusting me to photograph your fine hounds for you over the years, Bridgette!

The 60th UKC Grand American is in the books, and as I expected, it was one that will forever remain a fond memory.

I showed my three year old Bluetick, Poison Whiskey Kaw-Liga, to a breed win in the open bench show Saturday morning. He spent some time socializing (one of his favorite things to do), and then it was time for him to rest until my nephew arrived for the youth show.

Harvey had never had his hands on a show dog prior to Saturday. He’s six years old and still just a slip of a little fellow, but he’s very studious and takes following instructions seriously. I gave him a crash course on gaiting and stacking Kaw-Liga on the bench the best he could, and got ready to send them off into the show ring.

I’ll admit, part of me feared that Kaw-Liga would pull him down on his face and drag him across the show barn, or bail off the bench at the first opportunity. My blue boy is a sweetheart though, and something told me that I could trust him to take care of Harvey.

My boys didn’t bring home a win, but Harvey went in without displaying a single trace of nerves and remembered every instruction I gave him. Kaw-Liga behaved perfectly for his little handler, and I couldn’t be prouder of them both-especially when Harvey insisted on making sure that he shook his opponent’s hand and congratulated him on his when. I suspect he will make a fine handler when he gets a little more size and practice on him, and as long as he wants to keep trying Aunt Jay will keep helping him learn.

As for my little blue dog, I realize he will never win the World at a bench show. He’s a nice hound, but I do know his limitations. However, he’s worth his weight in gold to me for the way he brings a smile to the face of everyone that meets him-especially a little boy who was very proud to stand behind him in my win picture.

This weekend was an excellent reminder that we shouldn’t always measure the value of a dog solely on their competitive merits. Thanks to Harvey, I was also reminded that we can enjoy competing with our hounds no matter how the chips fall when the placings are announced. He was just happy to be out there with Kaw-Liga, and that’s a feeling we should all embrace more often. See the comments to watch them in action!

Congratulations to all the winners. We’ll see you next year!

Grand American this year will be extra special for me. My nephew will be showing one of my hounds for the first time in the Youth Spotlight Show tomorrow.

He’s very young and green as a handler. However, I hope one day he realizes how special it was to me to send him into the ring at the event where I bought my first hound, showed my first hound, and have taken home hardware with a number of blue dogs over the years-including an earlier generation of the one he’ll be showing.

Maybe going to Orangeburg the first weekend of every January with Aunt Jay will become a tradition for he and his sister too.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the 60th UKC Grand American. Here’s a reminder of what it’s all about 🖤
