It's rare to do a wedding where I do not have some common thread with the people there. I am extremely fortunate in the sense that I've had enough life experiences, travel, and education to make connections with people from all walks of life. And when close friends and family ask me why I continue to photograph weddings as a full-time side hustle when they know how difficult it can be for me for on top of my other professional life when there are so few hours in a day, the best answer I can give is that I do it for the connections. The interactions. The added experiences and research into the human condition. Exposure to the inner workings of a multitude of lives that makeup this complex world we live in that many people never get to experience first had. Though I will say, occasionally, I fit in perfectly with couples and their friends. Skateboarders, artists, humanitarians, and even SpaceX employees from the other side of the country with whom I can discuss all the weird and nerdy things that are part of my personality that few people actually get to see.

Photographing weddings for the past 14 years, I usually see young couples just start their marriage journey. Ever so often I get to see couples after a veritable lifetime of partnership celebrating decades, and in this case, half a century of marriage. An achievement very few will ever experience. It offers a profound realization of how quickly the years pass, and what the goal ultimately is in life. Partnership, friendship, love, family, and friends. To experience this life fully. To appreciate the journey, the good and the bad, and to never stop moving forward.

It is not often I get to shoot a wedding for a model that I have worked with in the past. Needless to say, it's a recipe for some of my most memorable captures.

To be completely honest, in some ways I am selfish within my photography. I come in relaxed and do not have a rigid structure to how I run my business. My style does not follow trends and is not entirely conventional. I focus on the relationships, not the bottom line. I break the rules. I take chances, and do not rely on what the industry dictates I should do. I always told myself that if I was going to do this, I would do it on my own terms. I am not unprofessional, but when I pick up my camera, I need it to be a different world from regular day to day life. I need the freedom of it. The freedom to be artistic and true to who I am as a writer, and artist, and creator. And even though I am a high anxiety person, I still crave the unexpected that comes with the territory. I do not always have a plan. I come in blind, and hope that the universe favors my endeavors in this moment. And while yes, after 14 years of experience, I have learned a few things, the approach remains the same as it always has. Meaning there is no insignificant event. There is no monotony. Each day is like the first, and I am merely an eager observer trying my best to capture something in a way that fits my innate vision of the world. And each year I am forever grateful that people trust me to give them something unique.

Most questions have complicated answers. It creates a sense of unease in most people. I see this reflected through my daily observations and interactions with people within all walks of life. But luckily, the most important questions we have can have very easy answers. The question of what makes our lives worth living. What makes us the happiest. And through my work as a photographer, I have realized that more often than not, the answer always seems to be, love.

Shifting the perspective does not come naturally to us. To crave the comfort of familiarity. To avoid the risk of a new endeavor and its potential failures. But we have to move, and wonder, and change our position in the world. Or else the view will never change. The story will never continue. You will just remain static, repeating the same chapter.

I will never be a commercially successful photographer. I have great respect for those that can achieve that status. It takes a great deal of technical knowledge and consistency combined with business acumen and an artistic eye. I have tried that path, and found that for me personally, it took too much of a separation from my own humanity that I was willing to compromise. I simply cannot hold a camera, and see what others want me to see even though that is often what clients pay for. I can only see a world through my own filter. A filter born of solitude, and loss, and curiosity. A filter of a longing for some connection. We often photograph what we fear of losing the most. I would also argue that we photograph that which we wish to be able to understand. That which we long for. Connection, to others, and to the world at large. Without which I see no purpose. And without purpose, I may as well just stay in my comfort zone and walk alone as I photograph the skies and the mountains. That is why even as I struggle with gratitude in personal life, I am always grateful for the work I am allowed to do with my camera. It’s as though people come to me and say. “We see you, and want nothing more than what you see.” As I start my 14th year as a professional photographer, I just want to give my gratitude to everyone who has allowed me be a part of their most important moments, and allowed me to connect.
