Most questions have complicated answers. It creates a sense of unease in most people. I see this reflected through my daily observations and interactions with people within all walks of life. But luckily, the most important questions we have can have very easy answers. The question of what makes our lives worth living. What makes us the happiest. And through my work as a photographer, I have realized that more often than not, the answer always seems to be, love.

Shifting the perspective does not come naturally to us. To crave the comfort of familiarity. To avoid the risk of a new endeavor and its potential failures. But we have to move, and wonder, and change our position in the world. Or else the view will never change. The story will never continue. You will just remain static, repeating the same chapter.

I will never be a commercially successful photographer. I have great respect for those that can achieve that status. It takes a great deal of technical knowledge and consistency combined with business acumen and an artistic eye. I have tried that path, and found that for me personally, it took too much of a separation from my own humanity that I was willing to compromise. I simply cannot hold a camera, and see what others want me to see even though that is often what clients pay for. I can only see a world through my own filter. A filter born of solitude, and loss, and curiosity. A filter of a longing for some connection. We often photograph what we fear of losing the most. I would also argue that we photograph that which we wish to be able to understand. That which we long for. Connection, to others, and to the world at large. Without which I see no purpose. And without purpose, I may as well just stay in my comfort zone and walk alone as I photograph the skies and the mountains. That is why even as I struggle with gratitude in personal life, I am always grateful for the work I am allowed to do with my camera. It’s as though people come to me and say. “We see you, and want nothing more than what you see.” As I start my 14th year as a professional photographer, I just want to give my gratitude to everyone who has allowed me be a part of their most important moments, and allowed me to connect.

I never intended to photograph weddings for as long as I have. For someone like me, it’s actually an arduous task. I am high anxiety, to the point of meditation. I worry, I stress about everything that could go wrong. I hate crowds, loud noises. Most of the time I wish I could hide from the world, and yet, I continue to put myself into the apex of human jubilance. Because in some ways, weddings are a culmination of the human experience. That within all the chaos and uncertainty of life, we are able to celebrate our ability to love, and connect, and cherish the people who have stood by us through it all. For someone like me, it’s a curiosity while at the same time an art project. To capture these moments the way I imagine they feel. Foreign and familiar. Research, and documentation, and an exercise in hope.

I think some of us become photographers because we wish for something more from this world. Something that our minds cannot fully attain. To be a part of a moment in its entirety. To be able to split ourselves apart and consume every breath of life, and light, and color. Because we are so small, placed in this great expanse with such limitations. Some of us finding it impossible to simply be present. Distracted by our thoughts, our senses, our anxieties about the future and lamentations about our pasts. So, we take pictures as we wish the world to be. And in the moments where we are given the chance to be still, and silent, we can glance at a point of life which passed us by so quickly, that we wish we could live inside forever only to be able to experience every last drop of existence.

I have never treated photography like a business. Yes, I take my work very seriously. Yes, I am committed to everyone who hires me. Yes, my one and only goal is to deliver the best I can possibly do. Yes, I care too much about what my clients think about me and my work. But this is not a business. This is a gateway. This has always been a gateway. A gateway into the lives of amazing people. A gateway to the world at large that I would have never seen if it was not for my little cameras. A gateway into friendships, experiences, life lessons, new perspectives. All of the things that hold true value for me. Thats why in many ways, what I offer is simple, understated. It is not because of lack of experience or business acumen. It is simply because of gratitude for the opportunity to capture so many amazing moments for so many amazing people. Many of which today I call my friends.

The learning never stops. The doubt never ends. Even after 12 years, there is still a part of me that feels like an amateur who just gets lucky to get a few good shots here and there. Maybe that's normal. Maybe that's how it should be. And maybe the truth is, I should only worry if I am at the point where I am completely confident in myself. Perhaps that is the moment that I stop growing, and that's something I fear the most.

A perfect day is rarely dictated by weather alone. The sun brings with it opportunities in terms of photography, but challenges as well. The overcast and ever rain brings it own challenges, but also its own unique opportunities to capture life in a different way. I’ve never been one to care much about the conditions or location of a shoot or project. Over the 12 years of working as a professional in photography, and film I’ve come to realize that it is up to us to create those perfect moments. It is possible, with the right people, and the right mindset under almost any circumstances.
