April 2024 — I had the chance to photograph the historic first tunnel breakthrough for the Hampton Roads Bridge–Tunnel Expansion Project.
Ironically, I spent the whole drive there stuck in gridlock because the existing tunnel had just been shut down after a truck fire.
The massive tunnel boring machine “Mary,” built by , carved the new tunnels beneath the harbor. She has now been fully dismantled on the South Island and is being shipped home as the $4 billion project enters its last year of major construction, with both tunnels moving into the outfitting phase. It’s projected to open in spring 2027, and I can’t wait to finally drive through the expanded tunnels and feel the difference!
