A Beautiful Blend of Natural and Studio Portraits
Every once in a while we have the opportunity to photograph a session that blends classic portraiture with a little bit of fashion-inspired creativity. This recent session was one of those.

From the start, the goal was to create a variety of looks that felt natural, polished, and a little elevated. We began outdoors, where soft natural light and beautiful greenery created the perfect backdrop. The ivy walls, garden paths, and architectural arches gave us a timeless setting that allowed the portraits to feel both relaxed and refined. A simple black top and jeans kept the focus on expression, posture, and personality.

One of the things we love most about portrait sessions like this is how much variety can come from small changes in wardrobe and location. A cozy textured coat instantly brought a different mood to the images, adding warmth and a slightly editorial feel while still keeping the portraits approachable and authentic.

We then transitioned into the studio where the session took on an entirely different look. Studio portraits allow us to explore color, texture, and lighting in ways that are difficult to recreate outdoors. The soft painted backdrop paired with bold wardrobe choices created portraits that feel elegant, artistic, and a little dramatic.

These kinds of sessions remind us how much fun it is to explore different styles within one shoot. From natural outdoor portraits to polished studio images, each look highlights something a little different.

At Hayes & Fisk, we love creating portraits that feel both timeless and creative. Sessions like this allow us to experiment, play with light and styling, and ultimately create images that feel unique and memorable.

Father & Son | A Studio Portrait Session
There is something incredibly timeless about a black and white studio session—especially when it centers on a relationship as strong and genuine as this one.

This father and son session was simple in all the right ways. No distractions, no elaborate setups—just a clean black backdrop, classic styling, and the kind of connection that doesn’t need anything extra to shine. These are the sessions that remind us why we love what we do.

From the very first frame, their bond was evident. There’s a natural ease between them—playful in one moment, steady and grounding in the next. You see it in the way his son leans in without hesitation, the quiet confidence in dad’s presence, and the shared smiles that feel completely unforced. It’s the kind of connection that tells a story without needing a single word.

We love how black and white photography strips everything down to what matters most. Without color, your eye goes straight to expression, light, and emotion. Every detail—the curve of a smile, the closeness of a hug, the proud stance of a growing boy—becomes more powerful. This session is a perfect example of how simplicity can elevate a moment into something truly lasting.

We especially loved incorporating a mix of individual and together portraits. The solo images capture his personality—confident, kind, and full of life—while the portraits with his dad bring in that sense of support and belonging that makes this session so meaningful. Together, they tell a complete story.

These are the kinds of images that won’t just live on a phone. They belong framed on a wall, printed in an album, and passed down over time. Because years from now, what will matter most isn’t what anyone wore or where the session took place—it’s this connection, exactly as it is right now.

If you’ve been thinking about capturing your family in a way that feels classic, genuine, and completely focused on what matters most, a black and white studio session might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Some of the most meaningful photographs we will ever make are sitting unseen on our phones.

A screen is convenient.
A printed portrait is transformational.

One gets scrolled past.
The other becomes part of your home, your story, and your family’s history.

Children grow. Families change. Time keeps moving whether we are ready or not.
Printing your portraits is how you say, this mattered.
It is how you keep a moment from disappearing into the noise of everyday life.

Your memories deserve more than a camera roll. They deserve to be held, seen, and lived with.

Print the portrait. Frame the story. Keep the memory.

Sibling Portraits: Connection That Lasts

Some of the most meaningful moments we photograph during a family session happen when siblings are simply together. Whether they’re standing shoulder to shoulder, leaning in close, or sharing a quiet laugh, there’s a familiarity between them that can’t be posed or directed. It’s something that has grown over years of shared rooms, routines, and everyday life.

Sibling relationships evolve quickly. At younger ages, closeness often looks physical — small hands reaching for one another, a proud arm wrapped around a shoulder, or the comfort of standing side by side. As children grow, that connection becomes more relaxed and natural. Expressions soften, gestures become smaller, and the ease of being together shows in subtle ways. These transitions happen gradually, which is why preserving them matters so much.

For parents, sibling portraits often carry a special weight. They reflect not just how each child looks at a moment in time, but how they belong together. Years later, these images become reminders of childhood dynamics that may already be changing — who leaned in first, who smiled widest, who stood just a little taller.

Across seasons, settings, and ages, the thread that remains constant is connection. From sandy feet on the beach to autumn leaves and garden paths, each portrait holds a small piece of shared history. Together, they form a quiet record of growing up side by side.

Sibling portraits endure because they capture something families feel every day but rarely see all at once — the lasting bond between children who are growing up together.

Trinity High School Senior Portraits | Richmond, VA
There’s something special about senior sessions that celebrate not just a milestone year, but the passions and achievements that shaped it. This Trinity High School senior brought exactly that to his Hayes & Fisk session — confidence, character, and a deep pride in his school and team.

We began with his varsity jacket, a timeless symbol of dedication and accomplishment. Against our classic black studio backdrop, Trinity’s navy, green, and white colors stood out beautifully, creating portraits that feel both strong and classic. From relaxed smiles to more serious expressions, each image captured the balance of confidence and humility that defines this season of life.

Next, we highlighted his role on the Trinity football team. His athletic portraits showcase both power and quiet focus — from the dramatic shoulder-pad close-ups to full-length uniform portraits with helmet and ball in hand. The deep navy jersey paired with Trinity green accents created a bold, athletic look that feels unmistakably true to his team. These images tell the story of years of commitment, teamwork, and Friday night lights — the moments that make senior year unforgettable for student-athletes.

We also love including casual looks that reflect personality beyond the field. In his Trinity football tee and jeans, this senior’s natural confidence and easygoing style came through effortlessly. These portraits add a relaxed feel to his session and show more of his personality.

Finally, we finished with classic formal portraits in both suit and tuxedo. These polished images feel timeless and celebratory — perfect for graduation announcements, family wall art, and the lasting record of this milestone year.

At Hayes & Fisk, senior sessions are about more than photos — they’re about honoring the journey. This Trinity High School senior’s gallery beautifully captures strength, spirit, and the excitement of what’s ahead.
