Students across Virginia staged walkouts in response to Governor Glenn Youngkin's proposed guidelines for trans students. The walkouts we're organized by the Pride Liberation Project, a q***r advocacy group with chapters across the state.
The guidelines would require trans students to use facilities and programs that match their s*x assigned at birth and would require parental permission for students to use different names or pronouns. Under the guise of "a parent's right to know" these guidelines also suggest schools should out students to their parents and guardians. In an emotional speech, one student at Richmond's Open High School highlighted the need for schools to be a safe space for students whose parents aren't accepting and who may be afraid of repercussions at home if outed.
