Michael's collodion photographs are unique images made in the style and tradition of the mid-19th century traveling photographers. Each portrait is crafted on a 4″x5″ or 5"x7" glass or aluminum plate and is truly a one-of-a-kind image. Portrait, half and full day session are available and are great for individual or family portraiture, formal wedding portraits, engagements and maternity. The wet-
plate collodion process was invented by Frederick Scott Archer in 1851. Tintypes were safer and much less expensive than the earlier Daguerreotypes, so for the first time in history almost everyone could afford portraits of themselves and their loved ones. Each Tintype image is made directly onto a metal plate placed in the camera. These plates are individually prepared and must be exposed and developed within just a few minutes or they are ruined. The skill of the photographer in mastering the chemistry, lighting, and careful timing of Tintype portraiture is remarkable. Michael uses the same materials and techniques of Frederick Archer and other photographers of the day and prepares all materials from their most basic chemical ingredients. It is truly a hand-crafted process. Like the tintypes and ambrotypes from the 19th centure, your collodion image is a historical document. With proper care, it will last hundreds of years, far longer than any other photograph.
