Knowing which buttons to press is one thing. Understanding exactly how your camera will interpret movement and light is something completely different.
This morning, I taught Beginners Photography: Part 2. We explored slow shutter speeds, timed exposures, motion blur, light trails, and how to freeze moving subjects with precision.
We started inside with several hands-on demonstrations so the students could see how changing the shutter speed directly affects the final image. Then we took the cameras outside and applied those lessons in real-world conditions.
My Beginners Photography course is divided into three focused, three-hour classes. By the end of the full nine-hour program, my goal is for every student to understand exactly how to control their camera—not simply rely on automatic mode and hope for a good photograph.
I don’t just explain the settings. I demonstrate what they do, why they matter, and how to use them creatively.
When my students finish this course, they know how to take control of their cameras and intentionally create the images they envision.
That is the difference between taking pictures and learning photography.
