On a shark swim out of Haleiwa, we had a Galapagos shark come by. I asked the divemaster if I could dive down with the shark, and he gave me the go-ahead. It was so incredible to swim near one (not too close, of course). When I surfaced, a couple of others asked to dive down. The DM said to go for it and “don’t swim toward them, swim alongside them as M’lady did.” (Oh, that cracked me up!)

Just before the end of our swim time, a tiger shark appeared. That was our goal, to see a tiger shark! We all stayed together near the boat and watched it slowly cruise by at a safe distance. So. Amazing.

Tiger sharks are opportunistic feeders, meaning they’ll eat pretty much anything - fish, other sharks, dolphins, cephalopods, and birds. In August and September, they cruise past the main Hawaiian Islands to the far Northwestern Islands where fledgling shorebirds, like albatross, are learning to fly.

I was so excited to see these endemic spotted wobbegong sharks resting along the reef off the Gold Coast of Australia. They blend in so well; I didn’t see the second one until I was over it.

I love their fringy mouth. Their pattern is so clever and clearly does its job along the reef.

Wobbegong shark “Orectolobus maculatus”
Diet: crab, lobster, octopus, bony fish

Our whale-watching boat was looking for humpback whales off the coast of Acadia National Park in the Gulf of Maine, when what to our wondering eyes should appear? A basking shark!

Its large fin drifted through the water, and we could just make out the dark shadow of its approximately 20-foot, 1,100-pound body under the surface. I wish we’d had an underwater view to see its enormous open mouth while it filtered ocean water for microscopic plankton.

Basking sharks are the second-largest fish. Whale sharks are the largest.

Basking shark “Cetorhinus maximus”
Diet: Plankton
IUCN Red List: Endangered

First dive, first shark!

On my son’s first dive, a Discover Scuba dive in Hawai’i, he saw 2 massive green sea turtles (honu) and this beautiful whitetip reef shark. They were all resting in their respective places along the reef. I was so excited to see a whitetip reef shark and super excited for him to see one on his first dive!

Whitetip reef sharks pump water through their gills while resting so they don’t need to constantly swim to breathe.

Whitetip reef shark
Scientific name: "Triaenodon obesus”
Hawaiian name: manô lalakea
Diet: reef fish, octopus, crustaceans
IUCN Conservation status: Vulnerable

Ever experienced a shark swim by?

While our group had the unexpected pleasure of swimming with wild dolphins, this Galapagos reef shark came up on my left just out of my peripheral. At first I thought it was another dolphin. Nope. Not a dolphin. It was a happy surprise.

Also known as grey reef whaler or mackerel shark

It's Shark Week! I love sharks 💞 and I'm looking forward to watching the research-focused episodes this week.

I photographed the action and grace of this beautiful blue shark on a nighttime research outing between Long Beach and Catalina Island, CA.

After our group caught several small blues to collect data, tag, and release, we snorkeled partially over the edge of the cage. It was absolutely incredible to watch so many sharks swimming alongside our boat and cage and to know we were collecting valuable information. The downside was that we smelled like chum for days, even after multiple showers! The wetsuit didn't keep smelly floaties out; it more likely kept them close and smooshed them into our pores! I would absolutely do it again. 😉

Blue Shark "Prionace glauca"
Diet: small fish and squid
IUCN Conservation status: near threatened
