It may have snowed in the high country this weekend, but it’s still summer down in the valley. Today’s dye flower harvest was a good one! I’ve fussed over these plants since April, and for the past month they’ve been flowering profusely. A friend counted 5 different species of bees in my front beds on a recent visit. This morning I watched two hummingbirds feed as I waited on the sidelines with my garden sheers. Also, my milkweed are all topped with seed pods bursting with iridescent feathers and the seeds that hold the promise of another year’s beautiful bloom. Grateful. ☺️

“29 Palms was the name of the place” is the title of my new embroidered postcard. The title comes from the last line of the message written on the card, a message composed but apparently never sent as the card was neither addressed nor stamped. That makes me wonder if it was written as a sort of diary entry, a memento the traveler intended to keep for herself to jog the memory of a future version of herself trying to recall where exactly they visited and what they saw. As such it anticipates a forgetting, even of an experience that felt memorable at the time.
A recent story in the L.A. Times inspired this postcard. The article, “Solar project to destroy thousands of Joshua trees in the Mojave Desert” by Melody Petersen, details the challenges faced by a particular renewable energy project, but I know that many energy projects entail similar trade-offs. This had me tied up in knots, as I often am these days. How do we decide what to preserve and what to destroy in the name of “progress”? Who do we expect to pay the cost of “progress”, both in dollars and in compromised health and quality of life? When we already have so much land that is paved over, why must we clear more for such developments?
I started embroidering postcards as a response to proposals to launch reflective particles into the stratosphere with the intention of lowering global temperatures. More recently my embroidery work has been in response to a variety of climate-related news items, but all of my postcards share the same fundamental concerns. How will the places we love look 5 years—or 20 years—from now? Will we adequately value all lives—human and non-human—in our pursuit of progress? How do we witness the lives that we have irrevocably altered (or ended) in our pursuit of progress? Can we (re)make our world beautiful?.

Happy Solstice my friends! I've posted solstice greetings and some other updates on my website. Please stop by.

On Monday of this week, I celebrated my first harvest of flowers from my home pigment garden. I cut moonshine yarrow, purple pincushion (Scabiosa), coreopsis (Tickseed, two varieties), and buckwheat flowers. Lots of yellows and a little purple, as that’s what’s abundant in my early summer garden...

Looking for something to do Saturday afternoon? Join me at the artists’ reception for Altar’d Landscapes at the Depot Gallery in Sparks! I’m honored to be showing four of my embroidered postcards in this group show sponsored by Sierra Arts Foundation ().
Altar’d Landscape ponders this question through the works of a number of Nevada artists, all of whom are interested in the intersection between the natural landscape and man-made forces. From human development to the disruption of natural cycles, these artists depict their surroundings in order to consider these questions being asked right in their own backyards. Through these works, we aim to use art to contribute to the ongoing conversation on land use in our region, as well as a broader reflection on what is most important to us.

Group show featuring artwork by William Burrows, Mackenzie Dimino, Naomi DeVore, Andrea Laue, Bobby Lee, John L’Étoile, Samantha Meehan, Rachel Stiff, and Peter Whittenberger..
