This photo is definitely in my top ten, best of the best photos. From the setting to the colors and, of course, the subject, it makes me feel proud.
I love owls, well... I love all raptors, but owls as a whole take the cake - especially the Barn Owl. Ever since I was a kid, Barn Owls have caught my fascination. From their looks and their biology, I have always held them in the highest regard.
The first few months that I was starting to get into photography, I took a trip with my father during the Covid epidemic. We took a road-trip to Lassen National Park, up through the west coast, into Crater Lake National Park, and into Corvallis and Portland.
During our journey, we stopped and visited the Chintimini Wildlife Center. One of the first photos I ever took of a raptor was their ambassador animal, Beou, who was a rehabilitated one-winged Barn Owl. That first photo got me hooked and led me down the road to where I am today. It is something special to have come full circle with this photo, looking back on the things I have learned and accomplished through my photography.
Red-tailed Hawks are synonymous with desert landscapes and Nevada itself. Known for their striking features, such as their rust colored red tail feathers, their curved beaks, and varying colors and patterns of their plumage (as a species, they have one of the most diverse ranges of colors and patterns).
I was fortunate enough to have this one fly on a light post just over me as I was leaving Swan Lake Nature Study Area - resulting in some of the best close-up raptor shots I have taken.
