❤️ Happy Valentine's Day ❤️

This lovely red tanager was originally far away but nestled in a palm with the fronds draped around it - a stunning little hideaway but as the only all-red bird in North America, it certainly stood out -- even from a distance. I took the 2nd shot (first) and then I lost him. Damn.
*
Then, I realized he was right in front of me... looking right at me. So, I snapped that first shot.

Rooting for their survival

There’s something truly humbling in moments like this — a tiny, critically endangered hummingbird fighting a fragile ecosystem, and somehow radiating this fierce, improbable hope. The mangrove hummingbird is such a perfect symbol of resilience.

Well... I’m about to head to the airport after an incredible trip here in Costa Rica. From friends I traveled with at the start of this adventure: Katherine, Angela, Leslie, Shannon and Teresa; to food to critters - everything was incredible! I’ve met some great new friends too (Paula and Dave, Roberto, and Franklin)... and Mary (in Drake Bay) plus Alex and Danna! Some really great folks everywhere I went. I traveled alone but I was never lonely!

I have a ton of photos to go through, but I stumbled on this one to post before I go as I love kingfishers and it was one of the first really good shots I got toward the beginning of the trip! This was taken in the Sierpe mangroves on the Osa Peninsula. I saw some truly spectacular birds there (some mangrove endemics including the critically endangered mangrove hummingbird [that was nesting!] of which there are fewer than 1000 left, sadly). I can’t wait to go through all of my images. The bird-life here is absolutely magnificent! Pippa - I’m ready to come back whenever you want and I have lots of good info now too.

OK, so off I go - SJO to IAH, IAH to SEA. An easy two-flight combo to get home. Gotta like that too.

It's been a while since I last posted... simply put, life gets a bit crazy and the first thing I tend to cut are social accounts. Despite how much I love posting, I just needed some time away!

But, it's about time!

And, I can't help but post a couple of the fantastic birds I saw this morning (starting with this falcon). It was a lovely 5am wander about an area about 15 minutes south of Jaco, Costa Rica! I've been in CR for a few weeks and I've been loving it. What a great place. Jaco is a bit more touristy than some of the other places I've been but there's still A LOT of wild around.
*
The first image it was all puffed up. Then, it must have thought - oh, no, that's not the image I want to convey. ;-) So, they changed to a more regal pose. I love the first image though. That's definitely what I'll remember.

Such a wild body - from the snout to the HUGE dorsal - everything about these great hammerheads seems exaggerated. I absolutely love how they glide by with so much ease. I have a few that I really love from the 17th!

Emily - Coming in HOT! 💙🦈
*
There are numerous regulars at Tiger Beach. They all have different personalities and characteristics. Some can be quite large. Some are more inquisitive. And some are pretty spunky! Emily is one of those. She had quite the personality and she definitely wasn't shy. But, don't misunderstand, it wasn't a scary thing - just a "stay aware" thing where you definitely wanted to watch where we was and what she was doing. She could turn on a dime and do a fly by to check you out so even if she looked like she was swimming away, you needed to watch until she was away and not just passing (assuming she would continue on that specific path). She was one of my favorites to watch on this trip! I took TONS of pictures of her. These are a few of my "Emily - Coming in HOT!" shots. What a character! I can't wait until I get to see her again!! 💙💙💙
