While it may not look like it, NYS&W 142 was built a mere 37 years ago! This steam locomotive was built in 1989 in Tangshan, China, for export to the United States. While much of the US had moved onto diesel power, steam was still king in China around the time of 142's construction.

The whistle on 142 in the video has an interesting backstory. It may sound like a long bell 3 chime, but in actuality, its an 8" 3 Chime off of the Staten Island Ferry Boat "Gold Star Mother." While not the absolute final class of ferry boat to be steam powered in the New York Harbor, they were among the last. This anecdote is quite interesting to those who seek to learn about forgotten history.
