One final game. One final sideline. One final chance to wear the pads.

Today’s West Virginia North-South Football Classic ended with a 34-7 victory for the North, but the score wasn’t what made the day special.

For the athletes from all over West Virginia , it was one last opportunity to share the field with teammates, opponents, and coaches who have helped shape their high school careers. The North-South Game has a way of bringing people together who have spent years competing against one another and creating memories that will last long after the final whistle.

As I worked the sidelines today, I found myself drawn to the moments between the plays. The conversations. The celebrations. The pride coaches have as they watch these athletes compete one more time.

One of my favorite images from the day captures the pure joy and intensity of a coach celebrating an athlete’s success. It’s a reminder that while the game belongs to the players, there are coaches on every sideline who have poured countless hours into helping these young men reach this moment.

Today wasn’t just about football. It was about relationships, memories, and closing one chapter before the next begins.

Congratulations to all of the athletes and coaches who took part in the 50th Annual West Virginia North-South Football Classic.

⚾️ An Instant Classic in Canton

Friday night’s matchup between Hoover and Walsh Jesuit delivered everything you could ask for in a postseason-style baseball game.

Hoover grabbed an early lead, Walsh Jesuit answered, and neither team was willing to give an inch as the game remained deadlocked through nine innings. With the score tied 2-2 in the 10th, Colin Locigno connected on a two-run homer that proved to be the difference, lifting Walsh Jesuit to a 4-2 victory.

The game featured outstanding pitching performances on both sides, timely defensive plays, and relentless effort from start to finish. Hoover continued to apply pressure on the bases all night, while Walsh Jesuit’s lineup came through with key hits when it mattered most.

Sometimes the final score doesn’t fully capture the quality of the game, and this was one of those nights. Congratulations to Walsh Jesuit on the hard-earned win, and congratulations to Hoover on a tremendous battle in a game that showcased the best of high school baseball.

Not every story from the OHSAA State Track & Field Championships happens on the track.

Some are found in the workers who arrive before sunrise and stay long after the final medal is awarded. Some are hidden in the rain that rolled through Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, in the quiet moments between events, and in the small details athletes carry with them—an All-Ohio certificate clutched tightly in hand, a pair of rhinestone-covered spikes, a bag waiting patiently for its racer to return.

Some stories are passed from one generation to the next, like a pole vault lesson shared between an experienced coach and a young boy watching with curiosity. Others are found behind the scenes—in the media room, among friends covering the action, and in the countless moments that never appear in a box score.

And sometimes, a story is as simple as a tiny duck left beside the long jump media area that somehow became my newest travel companion.

This weekend was filled with champions, personal bests, heartbreak, celebrations, and memories that will last a lifetime. While the results will always be remembered, it’s the people, the moments, and the details in between that make this event special.

It has been an honor to spend the weekend documenting as many of those stories as possible.
