A large group of foxtail grasses are growing in a neighboring farmer's field. I stopped by there last night with my camera. The way they catch the late day light is breathtaking ... and they make the loveliest sound when the wind moves them. I wasn't successful in making a photo of the large group of the foxtails that seemed to do them justice ... but I will try again. For now, I'll post this macro shot.

I had planned on taking the day off, and spend it with my camera in Central NY, and then go to the NY State Fair Artist Reception this evening. We've been so busy at work that I decided to forego my day off, and just drive out to Syracuse after work to see if I had won any ribbons.
As it turned out, this morning at work was super stressful and I decided I really did want to take the afternoon off. I grabbed lunch, ran a quick errand, and then drove to the Montezuma NWR. Some of the birds were having a stressful day too. These two Great Egrets were having some territorial disputes, and put on quite a show for me, which was exactly what I needed today. I hope they are having a peaceful night.

I often hear "You are so lucky." Yes, it's true. I don't find these things, they find me. I so often happen to be in the right place at the right time, or find something that everyone else has walked right by. Sometimes I think of Alice Walker's book The Color Purple - and the idea within that these amazing, beautiful things show up as gifts to us. I also think that the little things are the big things ... how wonderful the surprise of finding a wild orchid can be.

It was windy this morning with very low light - I might have been able to get a better photo on a different day, but I'm still thrilled with the experience of spending time in the woods with this treasure.
