One of the most fascinating things happens when you sit down for an in-depth interview with someone.

If you listen carefully enough, they eventually tell you what's really on their mind.

Over the years, I've conducted hundreds of branded profile interviews, and one lesson continues to surprise me: great stories don't always come from great questions.

I know interviewers who are masters at asking probing questions, and the results are remarkable.

My approach is different.

I become quiet.

Much quieter than I am in everyday life.

And I've learned that when you give people space, they almost always fill it.

The silence becomes an invitation.

They begin sharing the things that matter most to them—the experiences that shaped them, the challenges they overcame, the philosophies they live by, the lessons they've learned, and sometimes even the secrets they've never planned to tell.

The best interviews aren't interrogations.

They're conversations built on trust.

My process usually starts long before the camera rolls: a pre-interview, a few texts, a little humor, and a reminder not to take ourselves too seriously.

From there, the story tends to find its way.

And after hundreds of interviews, I've come to believe that storytelling is less about extracting information and more about creating an environment where people feel comfortable enough to reveal who they really are.

What were we thinking? 😂

A full fight scene on the back of a pickup truck… driving through actual streets in the Hollywood Hills.

Sure. Let’s do it.

Several decades ago, Robert, Ken, George and I — along with an incredibly dedicated crew of filmmakers — made “Deadly Diversions” over the course of nearly 9 weekends.

We had:
🎬 Over a dozen actors
🥷 Ninjas & wrestlers
📍 Tons of locations
💸 Almost no budget
🔥 And just enough crazy ambition to believe we could pull it off
And somehow… we did.

The film sold into several territories. Did it put us on the map?

Maybe not.

But it taught us everything about hustle, creativity, problem solving, friendship, and independent filmmaking.

Back then, nobody told us what we couldn’t do… so we just kept filming.

A little embarrassed posting this 😅

Back in 1992, if you wanted investors to believe in your movie, the advice was: shoot a trailer first. So that’s what we did.

“Crusade” — shot on 16mm film, one long day, a dozen actors, several locations, and a whole lot of favors. No money. Just ambition and probably too much confidence.

Funny thing is… those scrappy little projects usually teach you the most.Looking back, these little “test projects” end up teaching you the most.

And honestly, despite all the technology creators have today, the formula still feels the same: good people, big dreams, and figuring it out as you go.
