Some sessions stay with me longer than others. This one was Shannon and her dog Rudy, who won their session through a calendar contest I did with I.C.A.R.E. Dog Rescue.

I didn’t know either of them going in. But within minutes, it stopped feeling like a photoshoot. Shannon leaned into Rudy the way you do with someone you’ve loved for years, and somewhere in there, she and I stopped being photographer and client and started talking like old friends.

None of it was performed. That’s the part I keep coming back to. The best moments in this work are never the ones I ask for.

I spent twenty-four years as a lawyer. Early last year, I finally closed that door. Not because I hated the work, but because a part of me was waiting for something more. I found it behind a camera, photographing the bond between people and their animals, work that gives back through the rescue partners I support along the way.

I didn’t leave law to take pretty pictures. I left it to build something that means something.

Today’s chore-day outfit included an old Chevrolet shirt, and it got me thinking. My husband Bill has only ever owned Chevys. Not because they’re the best trucks on the road, but because his grandfather started a Chevy dealership in Iowa, his uncle still runs it, and driving one keeps him connected to where he came from.

I left a 25-year law career to build something with that same kind of meaning behind it. A lot of what I create lives inside projects built around giving back, Love, Your Low Rider and Love at First Sight(hound) both include a donation to rescue with every dog featured. And everything I make, project or private commission, is built to be kept, not lost in a camera roll. That’s the actual reason I do this, not a line I say to sound good.

If that’s the kind of work you want behind your own photos, I’d love to talk. Funny what a t-shirt can remind you of on a Sunday.

Welcome to What’s Up Wednesday!

I’ve shared what’s up for me this week. Your turn!

08/11/2026

I don’t ride as often as I used to. Life’s pulled me in a different direction these days. But horses are still very much part of my story, they show up now through the work I get to do with clients like these. Thank you for trusting me with your horses.

Every session reminds me why this still matters to me.

And in a few weeks, I’m headed somewhere that’s been on my list for a long time: the Camargue, to photograph the wild horses of southern France. There’s even a trail ride waiting for me while I’m there, not something I do often these days, but I can’t wait for this one.
