The best rooms know how to hold two different moods in one day. In the afternoon light, you're noticing the architecture, the florals, the way the sun hits the windows. By the time dinner service starts and the candles are lit, the whole room has shifted into something intimate. Then the lights go out and it's time to party!

If you want your reception to make that shift well, here's what I'd focus on:
Invest in lighting warm enough to change the temperature of the room once the sun goes down, that's what does most of the work after dark. Think candles, table top lamps, and professional lighting.

Tables with enough room to breathe so your centerpieces and place settings aren't competing for space (and so your guests don't get petals in their food).

Upgrade your chairs! They're one of the most photographed elements on a wedding day.

And don't skip patterns and texture in your linens, it catches the light differently depending on where you're standing, which adds a richness that flat fabric just can't.

I get to watch this shift happen at almost every wedding I shoot, and it never stops being one of my favorite parts of the day, a space telling two completely different stories by 9pm than it did at 2pm, and somehow both versions are the one the couple remembers most.

One thing you'll notice if you scroll through my work is that I have a deep appreciation for both ambient light and direct flash. Some photographers are firmly on one side or the other. I'm not.

I love ambient light because it captures a room exactly as it felt. The glow of candlelight during dinner. The warmth of chandeliers overhead. The atmosphere your planner, florist, and designer spent months creating. The projection adding texture to the walls and the way light illuminated ribbons through drapery.

But I also love direct flash because sometimes a photo should feel a little less polished and a little more alive. A great reception has energy. Movement. Personality. Direct flash has a way of preserving that feeling in a single frame.

The truth is, neither is better. They're just different tools for telling different parts of the story. Some moments call for softness and atmosphere. Others call for a little edge and the best wedding galleries have room for both.

One of the funniest things about weddings is that the things we worry about are almost never the things couples remember afterward.

I can't tell you how many conversations I've had about rain forecasts, timeline logistics, family dynamics, whether a dress wrinkle will show in photos, or if guests will notice that one detail didn't go according to plan. Then the wedding happens, it comes and goes, and all you remember is how it felt.

My couples remember their dad crying during the first look. Their college roommates tearing up during speeches. Their grandmother dancing. The fact that all their favorite people were in one place at the same time.

I've photographed enough weddings to know that perfection isn't what makes a wedding memorable. It's the people and the attitudes surrounding you. So if you're planning a wedding right now and spiraling over some tiny detail, there's a very good chance that six months from now you won't even remember it happened. And I mean that in the most reassuring way possible. Things always work out the way they're supposed to.

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about quality versus quantity. If you've spent any amount of time on social media, you've probably heard some version of the advice: post more, show up more, share more, be everywhere all the time, consume, consume, consume. And maybe that works for some people. But if I'm being honest, it's never felt very much like me.

Most days, I'm juggling a business, two little kids, wedding weekends, editing deadlines, and trying to spend a little more time outside and a little less time staring at my phone. I've realized I don't actually want to build a life where every moment is content.

So while you probably won't see me posting three times a day or sharing every detail of my life, you will see the work I'm proud of. The weddings that move me. The destination adventures that inspire me. The moments that feel worth sharing. I'd rather show up with something meaningful than show up just to check a box.

Anyway, that's where my head's been lately.

Now tell me I'm not the only one trying to spend less time on my phone this year. 🤍

Listen, I know the Lake Como boat photos are everywhere... But can you blame me?

There are very few places in the world that live up to the hype, and Lake Como is one of them. The views are ridiculous, the light is incredible, and somehow every photo feels like it belongs in an old European film. This editorial session was a love letter to everything people imagine when they dream about an Italian destination wedding.

No, you don't need to get married in an Italian villa. But if you do...

This is the kind of magic we're talking about. The architecture. The fashion. The late-night dinners that somehow turn into dancing. The feeling of stepping into a place that already has a story long before your wedding day arrives.

This editorial was created to capture that feeling.

Not trends. Not performative luxury. Just beautiful design, incredible scenery, and the kind of atmosphere that makes people want to stay a little longer. Some places don't need much help being romantic and Italy is one of them.

With Raleigh fully in hockey mode right now, I'm bringing back one of my favorite weddings. Akul's hockey days may be behind him, but the crowd was still cheering like he'd just scored the game winner. 🏒❤️

Kyleigh + AJ's wedding day was the perfect mix of heartfelt, elegant, and genuinely fun. From an emotional first look to a packed dance floor, every part of the day felt centered around what mattered most: celebrating the life they've built together and the one they're excited to begin as husband and wife.

After meeting, navigating time apart, and finding their way back to each other stronger than ever, this day felt less like the start of their story and more like the continuation of something really special.

Donovan Manor provided the perfect backdrop with timeless architecture, classic white florals, and beautiful summer weather that showed off every corner of the property.

One of my favorite things about this day was how present they both were. They soaked it all in with private vows + dinner. The emotional moments, the laughter, the hugs from family, the speeches, and every minute on the dance floor.

Kyleigh + AJ, what a joy it was to document this chapter for you both. 🤍
