🌀 “Have you ever tried to enter the long black branches of other lives --
tried to imagine what the crisp fringes, full of honey, hanging
from the branches of the young locust trees, in early morning, feel like?

Do you think this world was only an entertainment for you?

Never to enter the sea and notice how the water divides
with perfect courtesy, to let you in!

Never to lie down on the grass, as though you were the grass!

Never to leap to the air as you open your wings over the dark acorn of your heart!

No wonder we hear, in your mournful voice, the complaint
that something is missing from your life!

Who can open the door who does not reach for the latch?

Who can travel the miles who does not put one foot
in front of the other, all attentive to what presents itself
continually?…

For how long will you continue to listen to those dark shouters,
caution and prudence?
Fall in! Fall in!

A woman standing in the weeds.

A small boat flounders in the deep waves, and what's coming next
is coming with its own heave and grace...

Now the sun begins to swing down. Under the peach-light,
I cross the fields and the dunes, I follow the ocean's edge.

I climb, I backtrack.
I float.
I ramble my way home.”

“I came up with a handful of rules: write a delight every day for a year; begin and end on my birthday, August 1; draft them quickly; and write them by hand. The rules made it a discipline for me. A practice. Spend time thinking and writing about delight every day.” - Ross Gay

Attempting to start a new habit inspired by Ross Gay’s Book of Delights and Florence Williams work on the topic of awe and resilience.

For the rest of the summer, I’m challenging myself to document either a daily delight, or a moment of awe. ✨

These photos are from a delight back in May: a walk around the Raleigh Rose Garden. 🌹

“If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy,

don’t hesitate. Give in to it.. whatever it is, don’t be afraid

of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb.”
- Mary Oliver

These two live fully into the “don’t hesitate” joyful spirit and we’re all here for it. 👏🏽

2023 Smoky Mountain Relay was a wild and beautiful blur. Our 12 person team ran 200+ miles and 22,500 feet of elevation gain from Brevard to Bryson City in a little under 36 hours. Moving through these ancient mountains on foot and by van day and night was unlike any endurance running experience I’ve had. Unplugged, immersed in nature and each other’s company, sleep deprived, buzzing on adrenaline, moving fast, then slow, then fast again. Thanks to Smoky Mountain Relay for creating such a unique event, and THANK YOU TEAM SENDERSONVILLE for saying yes to this wild ride!

“The very least you can do in your life is to figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof.” - Barbara Kingsolver

I hope for community that comes together for a common good. I hope for widespread respect, admiration and preservation of the natural world. I hope for sustainable solutions to climate change. I hope climbing can foster connection in a disconnected and polarized world.

For nearly my entire professional life (~14 years) I’ve worked for nonprofit organizations. The shape of that work has evolved over time, and with each iteration, it’s felt more aligned and more sustainable. I count myself pretty damn lucky to live under the roof of hope with the Carolina Climbers Coalition and its community. Let’s keep this good thing going y’all.

Moody edits of old iPhone photos from my last trip to Portugal in 2019 to see my grandparents. These are from Castelo de Linhares da Beira, a national monument outside of my mom’s hometown.

There are many definitions for the multifaceted Portuguese word saudade, but lately I’ve been digging the concept that it means “all things born of the soul that can only be felt.”

These photos, the arrival of warm/cool sunny bluebird days, memories from that early spring trip - got me sitting in a swirl of things born from the soul. 🌿☺️
