Killdeer have returned from wintering in Mexico or Central America to the Pike River! Aaron Menke photographed this killdeer yesterday! A plover- the killdeer will find a gravelly open area to nest or a farm field!

I love the softness of the river and all the browns of vegetation! Mallards, beaver, last seasons bird nests!

A deluge Sunday (9/11/22) and the Pike River restoration is holding back floodwaters on the North Branch exactly as it was designed to do! A drone photo looking north from CTH KR! The entire broad stream shelf is flooded on Monday!

Sharing the Pike River with Beavers! We have installed three culverts under active beaver dams south of Old Spring St and south of Case High School to allow water to flow and allow the beavers to co exist! We will be following these beaver culverts to maintain them and adapt as needed!

Back in 1996 when I was invited to be part of this initiative, I imagined what it might be. However, the reality of what it has become is beyond what I’d dreamed. Congratulations to Mt. Pleasant and thanks to all the great folks who’ve given their time, talent, hearts and souls over the past 25+ years to the North Pike River Restoration Initiative.

The resilience and vibrancy of nature is on display along the Pike River along the North Branch Pike River in Mt. Pleasant. These photos captured by a trail camera this summer reveal the diversity and beauty of life that is thriving along what was once considered a “dying drainage ditch”.

If you look closely you will see a Beaver Dam at the right edge of the photos. The restoration designs developed for the Pike River include specific spaces where beaver can build their dams, and create ponds that contribute to creating the diverse habitats that support ecological diversity. Yes, there are places were beaver dams can cause problems for people — yet there are ways to restore locations where they are able to coexist. It takes forethought, intentiality, and continual stewardship. But these photos hopefully show that it is well worth the effort!

Take a walk or bike ride on the Pike River trails with your friends, family and loved ones! You’ll be glad you did.
