Sometimes serving a veteran means showing up with a hammer, a shovel, and a willingness to get dirty.
During our Florida or Bust 2026 campaign, Ryan, Gary from Jail Bait & Tackle Outdoors, and I spent the day helping a disabled veteran rebuild a fence he was no longer physically able to complete himself.
What we thought would be a simple repair quickly became a much larger project. As the day went on, we discovered there was more work to be done than any of us expected. While we weren't able to finish the fence that day, we made tremendous progress and laid the foundation for what would eventually become a completed project.
The thing I've learned through this charity is that service isn't always glamorous. Sometimes it's digging holes, lifting lumber, solving problems, and figuring things out one step at a time. But that's where the real impact happens.
I also want to give a special shout-out to Kristyn. While the rest of us were focused on the fence project, she spent the day running errands, making supply runs, and helping keep everything moving behind the scenes. Many times the people who make projects like this possible never end up in the spotlight, but we absolutely could not have accomplished what we did without her support.
This project is exactly what the Lee and Betty Johnson Memorial Charity was created to do—not just raise money, but to ask a simple question:
"How can we serve those who served us?"
Thank you to everyone who supports our mission, follows these adventures, and helps make these projects possible.
The story isn't over yet. The completion of this fence is coming in a future episode of Florida or Bust 2026.
