This is the female Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) - Rare vagrants to North Carolina. I hope we get to see the male.

I believe this to be the mom. In the hawk species the female is the larger of the two. These shots were taken from about 200 - 250 feet.

The baby has changed quite a bit in the last two weeks. Now that he has more color and that I have seen the parents I can say these are Red Shoulder Hawks, not the red tail I originally thought.

The baby red-tail. The nest was very high so the wind really sways the tree.

Spent some time in the woods in Putnam today trying to find this nest. It was worth the wait. I believe this is a baby red-tail hawk.
