Galveston, Texas, 1972. Granddad took Grandmom and Uncle John out for a picnic lunch. They were divorced but, they always rendezvoused throughout the years. Granddad was a hobbyist photographer who loved taking portraits and painting them. He had a good eye. Uncle John was still in high school. So was my mother, though she’s not pictured in this set because at this time she and my father had already hooked up and it was adios to the southern border…

📸 I meet a lot of inspiring people working for Pueblo County Pulse. Meet Mike Marino.

🦆 Inside a quiet workshop in Pueblo County, Mike brings life and purpose to blocks of wood. His duck decoys aren’t just decoys — each one is a work of art — each one is an affirmation. In my interview with him, Mike opened up about his craftsmanship, and why he does what he does. It goes far beyond making the best decoys on the market. It goes into influencing lives and relationships. Mike also puts his faith at the forefront of everything he does, and I appreciate that.

🤔 Mike represents a lot of what I think makes Puebloans tick: hard work, humility, friendliness, family, faith, community. I’ll let you figure out the appropriate order of priority.

I’m intrigued by obscure figures in history. Francis Schlatter (1856-1896) was an Alsatian cobbler known as “The Healer” who wandered around the American Southwest performing “miracles.” He also claimed to be the reincarnated Jesus Christ. But his healings and teachings were so convincing, he drew crowds of thousands throughout Colorado and New Mexico, before his skeleton was found beneath a tree in the Sierra Madres of Mexico. However, due to his rising fame, it was rumored Schlatter staged his death and continued performing his “miracles” for another twenty-five years, but there were also a lot of imposters who followed in his wake.

My maternal granddad, John Yates Jr., also fought in the Korean War. He was an enlisted soldier in the Army, assigned to the 7th Infantry Division during September 1952 until the end of the war in July 1953. Here he’s on the left. I’d say he’s about 24 years old. Looks like he just received his CIB (Combat Infantryman Badge), worn above his left lapel.

John H. Jordon, USMC, Korean War, 1951.

That’s my grandfather, age 19. Papa John received the Purple Heart while serving his country. He told me he was sleeping outside, bundled up in his fart sack, when a Jeep ran over him, injuring his shoulder. It was an injury that would persist the rest of his life, but he never complained about it.

Restoring photos lately has become so efficient, I’m able to restore images with amazing clarity and historical accuracy in minutes - in what would have taken me hours just two years ago.

Here’s another from the vault. That’s my great-grandmother, Mae Etta Yates, otherwise known as Nana, in her early 20s. She was born in 1906, and my estimate is this photo was taken in the late 1920s. I haven’t seen a photo of Nana this young, and of course I remember her as a quite elderly woman - with a very lively personality. Restoring this photo, I was surprised to discover what an attractive young woman she was.

Been a while since I restored something from the vault. Here’s a photo from 1946. That’s my grandmother, Betty Brown, at home in Houston, Texas. She’s 16. I’m not sure which one of her parents took this shot, but I doff my cap to them.
