Ángel Rivero Méndez established the Polo Norte soda company in 1902. The name is derived from the numerous expeditions vying to reach the North Pole during this time period, a competition many believe was won by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen in 1923--but it's also a great allusion to the cold and refreshing drinks the factory would produce! Its tiled facade, commissioned in Seville, Spain, still stuns on the streets of Old San Juan in Puerto Rico. #🇵🇷

I love this little pop-up window on the third floor! I know it’s anachronistic, but it must let a lot of light in when compared to the smaller clerestory windows to the left. Within reason, I really appreciate these little tweaks that people do to old houses that make them function better in the present—to me, living structures are much more appealing than letter-perfect preservation. But that’s just me—what do you think?
