Its a nice bonus when the insects that work for a living let you see them in action, too.

Just up the road from the nesting eagles at Elk River is the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, which starting in April has a lovely wildlife drive where you can tour nature from your car.

Be smart and wait for April. Don't be like me and hoof it down the trail when the wind is whipping and it's single-digits outside.

At the Bailey Point Nature Preserve in Elk River, Minnesota, there is an active breeding pair of Bald Eagles, their DNR we**am (https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/features/we**ams/eaglecam/index.html) is currently blown out of frame by some recent high wind but happily the trail and viewing area are within reach of a long telephoto lens and a very patient/very cold photographer. With the wind chill, it was 7 degrees.

Red Wing also boasts a Great Blue Heron Rookery on the same bend of the river as the Eagles. I found all 20+ of these giant velociraptors extremely uncooperative when it came to portraits. Might try again in a week or two!
