the strange thing about photographing a wedding is knowing
while everyone else is living the day
i am watching it disappear.
the dress hanging in the window before there is a body inside it
your mother fastening the last button with hands that once buttoned your childhood coats
your father seeing you and suddenly forgetting whatever clever thing he meant to say.
click.
keep that.
the nervous hands
the crooked boutonnière
the friend on the floor
looking for an earring
someone laughing
in the next room
someone crying
and insisting
they are absolutely not crying.
and then
you.
walking toward the person
who has somehow become
home.
there are hundreds of people
breathing around you
flowers
music
promises
and for one small second
you look at each other
as though there is
no one else.
click.
keep that too.
because this is the secret
of a wedding day:
the photographs you think you want
are rarely the ones
you will need.
someday
you will know every word
of your vows by heart
or perhaps forget them entirely
the flowers will be gone
the cake eaten
the dress tucked into a box
and the people in these photographs
will change.
hair will silver
hands will wrinkle
children not yet imagined
will appear in frames
of their own.
some chairs
around the table
will become empty.
and then
these photographs
will become something else.
your mother's hands
will still be fastening that button.
your father will still be looking at you
as if he cannot quite understand�how all those years
fit inside one doorway.
your friends will still be young
and ridiculous
on the dance floor.
and the person you love
will always be standing there
waiting.
perhaps that is why
i photograph weddings.
because love is enormous
and somehow
it keeps hiding
inside very small things:
a thumb brushing away a tear
a forehead against a forehead
two hands beneath a table
the way your grandmother watches you dance
the way you reach for each other
without thinking.
these are the things
i am looking for.
the evidence.
the tiny pieces of forever
nobody knows are forever
while they are happening.
so while you are busy
getting married
i will stand somewhere nearby
watching the light
watching the hands
watching the people
who love you
love you.
and every now and then
when time forgets
to keep moving
i will press the shutter
and ask it
just this once
to stay.

i have always thought
a photograph is a strange little miracle

the way light
touches a thing
and says

stay.

your hand in mine
your head thrown back laughing
the afternoon caught
in your hair

all of it already leaving
even as the shutter clicks

and still

there you are.

perhaps that is what love is too—

not stopping time
(no one has ever been that lucky)

but noticing it

noticing
the coffee going cold between us
the wrinkle beginning beside your eye
the way your fingers find mine
without looking

the ordinary holiness
of being here
at the same time.

years from now
someone may hold this photograph
by its edges

and see two people
standing in sunlight

but i will remember
what the picture cannot:

what you said just before
i laughed

how warm your shoulder was

the tiny breath
between looking at you
and knowing

oh.

it is you.

it has been you.

and maybe photographs
were never meant
to make anything last

maybe they are only proof

that for one impossible second
time opened its hands

and there we were—

loving each other

while the light
was still
on us.

Everything she says is spot on.
Brides - think about your wedding day hair - hair in face, blows in face. You don't want to be pushing your hair off your cheek all day.

Think about how you will move on your wedding day. Twirl, spin, jump, sit, lift your arms, are you comfortable?

And her notes on the bustle - 1,000. I've found myself under dresses so many times connecting bustles. Which is fine. I'm here to help, but these things save you precious moments when you can be having fun on your wedding day.

It’s Amanda + Brenden’s wedding day.

In just a little while, they’ll exchange vows before God, surrounded by the people who love them most, with the newly ordained Father Jessiah Rojas of the Archdiocese of Washington celebrating his first wedding Mass.

There’s something especially sweet about today for me.

I first met Father Rojas last year, when he was still a seminarian on assignment for the Catholic Standard. Watching him now stand at the altar as a priest, preparing to witness the beginning of another vocation, feels like one of those reminders that God has been writing this story long before any of us could see it.

When I first met Amanda and Brenden, I learned Amanda was originally from Florida, like Denniss and me, and coincidentally she grew up just a few minutes from the town where my mom and sisters now live. Then came another small-world surprise: Amanda and Father Rojas had become friends years earlier while students at Ave Maria University.

The Church is wonderfully small that way. Lives intersect. Friendships endure. Vocations unfold alongside one another. And somehow, across states and seasons, God keeps gathering people back together at the altar.

It is a privilege to witness and document the beginning of their sacramental marriage.

Congratulations, Amanda + Brenden. We’re praying for you!
