Early mornings do have their benefits. I thought I had missed my opportunity to capture the Little Grand Canyon with the fog filling in what Mother Nature had eroded over the years. I checked a few weather forecasts and they were all consistent in showing no fog in the forecast. I was a little discouraged but decided to take a chance knowing at worst I would capture the sunrise and at best I’d capture what you see here.

Who enjoys waking up early on a cold day in January? I know it’s not high on my list of things to do. Yet I found myself doing just that. An inversion had settled in and was creating some crazy weather events. So I grabbed my camera that I’d been neglecting and off I went to capture the sunrise. What I found was a view of the San Rafael Swell I’d never before witnessed. The Swell was covered by an ocean of fog with Window Blind Peak rising majestically from it. Despite being almost a hundred miles away as the crow flies, the Henry Mountains stood over the landscape as if they themselves were in the heart of The Swell. For all of you who hit the snooze button, here’s what you missed out on.

Shooting a long exposure, in the early afternoon, without a filter isn’t the easiest. However I was able to find a shady area on the banks of the Middle Fork Santa Clara River which helped me get a shot I was going for.
