Tales from the Tripod

Tales from the Tripod I love to write. I love to take photographs. I love to travel. These are my musings through the pen and lens.

The hummingbirds were infatuated with the Century agave blooms—darting and dancing among the red and yellow pups, competing with the bees for nectar. I aimed my Nikon Z9 and fired 20 frames at 1/4000 of a second. The hummingbird never suspected it was in my crosshairs. He (or she) were now frozen—captured eternally in my 256GB memory card.

On my recent wildlife photography forays, I happened upon this Great blue heron perched high in a pine. Blue herons are waterfowl and I see them on shorelines regularly. Rarely do I photograph them because they’re about as common as a robin. But I notice at Goldwater Lakes, they like to retreat to the heights of the tree limbs. Just happened that the light and its pose were enticing enough for me to press the shutter. Notice how the breeze perfectly lifted the occipital plume on its head.

Finally got out for some wildlife photography. Bald Eagle I photographed at Watson Lake.

While driving to the art gallery yesterday, I passed some skateboarders doing skateboard things. Having my Hassy and a new 35-100 XCD lens in the backseat, I promptly made a U-turn and asked them if I could grab a few shots. They were skeptical at first, but kindly consented to let an old dude snap a few photos. Well, I’m grateful when the kids let gramps hang out with them for a bit. Shout out to all the crew from in Tempe for the free stickers.

Love the lens flares with the new lens. Lemme know what you think.

I’m guessing most of you don’t have a subscription to Alpinist magazine, but I wanted to celebrate my good friend, Erin Connery’s, short story fiction piece “The Mansion Traverse” that was just published in Issue 92. Erin is an extraordinary climber, route setter and writer. Just wanted to give him a shoutout since he’s too humble to do it.

Whether you have ever climbed or not, it is a story that will touch you.

A huge congratulations to for the release of her first novel today. I’ve never seen someone so committed and fed to their dream. The endless, unseen hours she has put into honing her craft. What an honor to witness her journey. And I’m flattered by her kind acknowledgement. Can’t wait to see what else is to come from Katie!
