The local tayra at Osa Conservation was being a little menace and chased this poor green iguana into the lab.

The next day the tayra chased an agouti into the pavilion! Poor gal was in shock and refused to leave for a few hours.

They both hung out with us for a bit to make sure the coast was clear before returning to the rainforest just a few feet away.

While on the way back to the Mara riverbank to collect our plaster mold of a hippo footprint, we came across a herd of elephants. Pictured here is the lead matriarch of the herd with her son. I’m still in awe I captured this beautiful moment between the two.

Did you know elephants, like humans, are usually right “handed” or left “handed”? Do you know how you can tell?

She’s left “handed”! You can tell because her left tusk is more worn down. Meaning she tends to use that tusk while she is foraging and digging up trees.

Pictured here is a young elephant calf playing with their slightly older sibling or cousin. Being playful is crucial for elephant calves survival. Through play they learn important skills and recent studies suggest the more playful an elephant calf the higher chance of survival they will have to reach adulthood.

African savanna elephants were added to the IUCN endangered list in 2021. That means both species of African elephants are at risk of extinction due to poaching and habitat loss.

If you look closely you’ll spot the letter “F” just over half way up this male Maasai Giraffe neck. Quite fitting since in the second photo he’s posing funny for the camera.

Did you know? There are four distinctly different giraffe species! This was first discovered genetically within the last 2 decades!

I've already posted some general information about these guys on my profile if interested :)

One of my all time favorite images and I very much look forward to photographing these noisy little birds again. Arriving and staying during their breeding season, I got to see the beginnings of their life cycle. Watching them build their nests, to courting females, hatching chicks, and protecting them from predators. For such a tiny bird, they have so much character. I never got bored of watching them.

I like to call this image Ducks in a Row for obvious reasons. Mallard sucks are the most common duck to see at bodies of water in North America, Asia, and Europe. They are extremely adaptive allowing them to use a variety of diverse habitats and ecosystems. They are often viewed as pigeons of the water, however they play a key role in connecting waterways. They are seed dispersers that connect wetland vegetation that would otherwise be cut off from each other. So next time you see a mallard, don’t dismiss him/her, give them a nod of appreciation.

Common Name: East African Crowned Crane
Scientific Name: Balearica regulorum
📸 Location: Maasai Mara Reserve

-------------------------------------------

The East African Crowned Crane is a beautiful and unique looking bird that's highly respected in Uganda as it is the national bird of the country. Many crane species are monogamous and the East African Crowned Crane is no exception. Although they do form large social groups throughout most of the year, during mating season bonded pairs will disperse to bring more of these endangered cranes into the world.

A noisy little bird often found near human structures that possesses the talent for intricate weaving, its common name really is suiting. The Village Weaver is a beautiful lemon colored bird with a distinct red eye. I loved shooting the nesting colony where I was staying in Africa, they had so much personality!

I am so thankful for the opportunities and growth Prescott College has offered me.

Common Name: Maasai Ostrich
Scientific Name: Struthio camelus massaicus

This pink necked ostrich is actually a subspecies of the Common African Ostrich. With an already pink complexion, it is fascinating to see this subspecies turn a sunburnt red during mating season in an effort to attract the attention of a female companion.

Common Name: Impala
Scientific Name: Aepyceros melampus
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
The funny face you're seeing from this Impala is actually a behavior known as flehmen response.
It's not uncommon for cats to do it too!
He is "tasting" the air with a special olfactory (smell) receptor called a Jacobson's organ located on the secondary palate (roof of the mouth). This organ is used to receive chemical communications (usually with pheromones) within the species.

(Don’t forget to give this post love on my Instagram!)
