My friend ✨S t e p h Y e a g e r✨ came to me earlier this year with a beautiful vision for the imagery around her next album. I immediately said yes and was honored for the opportunity.

We spent some time in the greenhouses at Woods Rose Market and up in the mountains making her vision come to life.

She has a couple more of fundraising to make this album a reality, if you love songwriting and music from the deepest and most tender areas of the heart, please consider giving!

Horseback on Sunday morning,
harvest over, we taste persimmon
and wild grape, sharp sweet
of summer’s end. In time’s maze
over the fall fields, we name names
that went west from here, names
that rest on graves. We open
a persimmon seed to find the tree
that stands in promise,
pale, in the seed’s marrow.
Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear,
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye
clear. What we need is here.

I have written and deleted a couple paragraphs about the beginning of bird season in Montana a dozen times this morning, but really the only thoughts I have for my fellow hunters are:

If social media didn’t exist, would you still be doing it?

If social media didn’t exist, would you change anything about the way you hunt?

Do you let your ethics loosen in order to have a photo of a pile of dead birds on the tailgate?

If you don’t post about your hunt, did you even go?

Who do you look to as an example or inspiration for hunting? The loudest voice in the room? The ones with the most following?

“Go to your freezer. How much and what kind of fish and game do you have left in there from the previous summer and fall getting freezer burn? Write it down and subtract it as penance from your bag limit this summer and fall.”— Jim Harrison, Sports Afield

What are you doing to give back and take care of the habitat, target species, *and* non-target species on the landscapes you hunt and elsewhere? Are you working towards a limit of birds every time you go out or preserving and bettering the above?
