Some photographs are really about a place's history.

Albany Covered Bridge is one of those images.

There's something about an old covered bridge that immediately connects a photograph to another era. The weathered wood, the surrounding landscape and the simple design all tell a story about how people once traveled through rural New England.

I love finding subjects like this because landscape photography doesn't always have to be about grand vistas. Sometimes the character of a place is found in a single structure that's been standing there for generations.

Sometimes the quietest places have the loudest stories.

Louisiana's cypress swamps can feel almost completely removed from the modern world.

Whispers of the Swamp is about that feeling — the quiet water, the ancient cypress and the sense that you're seeing a landscape that has been here long before us and will remain long after we're gone.

That sense of timelessness is a big part of the inspiration behind Into the Lost World: A Journey into Louisiana's Bayou Country.

The book grew from years of exploring these wetlands and trying to capture not just what they look like, but what they feel like.

The swamp can make you feel like you're being watched.

Golden Vigil captures one of the swamp's great hunters — a great blue heron — waiting for a morning meal to swim by.

The swamp is peaceful, but it is never completely still. There is always something moving, calling, watching or waiting just beyond the frame.

That atmosphere is a big part of what makes photographing Louisiana wetlands so addictive.

It's also what I try to share with photographers during Into the Swamp.

The Great Plains can make history feel enormous.

Chimney Rock Sunrise captures one of Nebraska's most recognizable landmarks beneath warm morning light.

For generations of travelers on the Oregon Trail, Chimney Rock was a landmark on a journey west. Standing there with a camera, it's hard not to think about how different this landscape must have looked to those travelers — and how significant this formation was as a sign of progress.

That's what I enjoy about Great Plains photography: The landscape often carries layers of history.

There are sunrises that make you understand why people keep coming back.

Minnesota's North Shore of Lake Superior has a quiet, rugged beauty that is hard to describe until you've stood there at first light.

Superior Sunrise captures that feeling — the enormous lake, rocky shoreline and soft morning color coming together before the day really begins.

I love photographs like this because they don't need a complicated subject. Sometimes the scale of the landscape and the quality of the light are enough.

The best landscape light isn't always blue sky and sunshine.

Storm Over Manistique is a reminder that weather can be one of the most powerful elements in a landscape photograph.

On Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a storm rolled across Lake Michigan while the Manistique East Breakwater Lighthouse stood against the changing sky.

I love photographing conditions like this because they add atmosphere, movement and a little uncertainty to the image.

Sometimes the storm is the story.

New England has a way of making sunrise feel like a history lesson.

Sunrise at Rockport Harbor captures one of those classic Massachusetts scenes where working harbor, fishing boats and the iconic Motif No. 1 come together beneath beautiful morning light.

I love photographing places where the landscape still reflects the lives of the people who use it.

Rockport isn't simply a pretty coastal town. Its harbor tells the story of generations of fishermen, artists and visitors drawn to this corner of Massachusetts.

Some places seem to get better the closer the sun gets to the horizon.

Maine's rocky coast is one of those landscapes that keeps rewarding you for slowing down.

Sunset at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse captures the rugged character of the Maine coast as the last light settles over the Atlantic.

Lighthouses combine landscape, architecture and history in a single scene. But the real magic is usually the light.

This is the kind of photograph that makes me want to keep exploring New England's coastline.

There are corners of Louisiana that feel like you've stepped into another world.

That's one of the reasons I chose the title Into the Lost World for my photography book about Louisiana's Bayou Country.

The swamp can feel ancient and almost untouched when you're drifting quietly between cypress trees, surrounded by still water and Spanish moss.

The Land Time Forgot captures that feeling — the sense that you have temporarily stepped outside of the modern world.

Those experiences are the reason I keep returning to Louisiana's wetlands with a camera.

And they're the stories behind many of the photographs in Into the Lost World: A Journey into Louisiana's Bayou Country.
