Lightweaver Photography By Ilene Olson

Lightweaver Photography By Ilene Olson I am a professional photographer who does portraits, events, products and whatever catches my eye. Nature often leaves me breathless.

I see beauty and interest all around me, in people and in nature. I love the history and wisdom written in the faces of older people who have lived full and interesting lives as much as I adore the tender innocence of infancy, the sweetness and mischief of childhood, the discovery of adolescence, the wonder of young love and the devotion of long-married couples. I am fortunate to live in northwest

Wyoming near Yellowstone National Park, the Absaroka Mountains, the Big Horn Mountains and the Beartooth Mountain Range. My photographic adventures often include going to places where I may see elk, bison, deer, grizzly bears and black bears, marmots and other wildlife. I am constantly awed by a beautiful sunset or a mountain landscape. I may be driving down a city street or a mountain highway and see something in a different light than I've seen it before, and I am mesmerized. I have to stop to capture the moment. Though most of my travels are within Wyoming or neighboring states, the world comes to me through local venues. I learn about and take photos of many cultures through the international student program at our local community college, and through other opportunities, such as the annual American Indian Powwow at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming. Through this page, I hope to share some of the wonder and the beauty that surrounds me and the special people who are part of my life.

I got my first good chance of 2025 to play with the Northern Lights last night. They didn’t last long due to the brightness of the moon, but it was a fun 20 minutes or so! Thanks, Greg and Sue Wise!

I can't leave summer behind yet! I need to share these photos that I captured as the sun was setting, followed by the the moon, at Deaver Reservoir in Wyoming's Big Horn Basin, just south of the Montana border. Read the descriptions for more information. These images speak volumes to me about internal peace and nature's vast, tranquil beauty. I'm so fortunate to live in Wyoming.

These images all feature iews from Chief Joseph Highway between Cody, Wyoming and Cooke City, Montana. They were taken in Wyoming on an evening in June, when clouds were beginning to gather around the mountains and overhead. It was an amazing evening. I was standing on cutouts beside the highway when I took all three photos. They were not taken with a drone.

This Fourth of July, I thought I'd post photos of my favorite fireworks. The aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, gave an incredible show over northern Wyoming on April 23, 2023. At this latitutde, if we see Northern Lights at all, they're usually just above the horizon, and they look like a bright fog in the distance. But on this amazing night, they reached much, much father — so high that we saw them dancing overhead. We even saw some faint color without the aid of long-exposure photography. But the real magic happened when we aimed our cameras and took long-exposure photos. These were taken over Deaver Reservoir, just south of Montana. Happy Independence Day, everyone!

"🎵At the end of the storm is a golden sky...🎶"
Tonight's rainclouds moved out just in time to frame a gorgeous sunset, changing from bright yellow to layers of beautiful, bright colors. Heart Mountain is visible on the lower left portion of the layered sunset photo, and shown in its full sunset glory in the third photo.
Heart Mountain has an amazing geologic history. You can read about it here. https://www.geowyo.com/heart-mountain.html

When traveling through the state of Wyoming, our route frequently takes us through Casper. I have passed this old place many times as we approach or leave the city, always with a promise to myself that, someday, I would stop and take a picture. There was always a reason why I couldn't do it then. Too little time; bad lighting, wrong time of day, not having the right equipment with me, etc. But when I saw this old place yesterday, surrounded by amazingly green grass and under a beautiful, soft light, with white clouds in a backdrop of dark ones, I knew the time had come. I couldn't pass by it this time. I'm so happy I stopped to record the moment and the beauty. When I look at a home and outbuildings like this, I wonder what the history is. Someone loved it once, enough to plant a beautiful tree. When they left, it died too. But there is still a haunting and rugged beauty left behind.

I braved this morning’s -27 degree temperature in hopes of seeing a sun dog. I’ve only seen a sun dog once in my life, but it was amazing. Apparently, conditions weren’t quite right. Perhaps there weren’t enough ice crystals in the air. But the sun definitely has a different look about it, and you can see where a portion of a sun dog could have been. It’s shaped like a parenthesis on the left side of the sun.
