After several years of photographing local bands, the most important tool I have seen for building a fanbase has nothing to do with the photos or videos that I take and that bands post.

It's creating connections with the audience.

There are many ways to build those connections. Sometimes it's having an audience member play the tambourine, or having flashy foam thingys for people to paly with, it's going out during the set-break to shake hands, or maybe it's giving birthday shoutouts.

But, what about when you're not on the stage? Well, it's this. The easiest and free-est tool you have. Make a video. 30 seconds or less. Have fun. Tell people where you are. Tell them where you'll be, next. Give shoutouts to people. Show band members having an arm wrestling contest. Talk about the next gig while you're cooking breakfast. It doesn't need to be carefully scripted. It should be raw, and fun, or serious, or whatever you feel like.

Just make more videos, and make them personal.
