KShields Photography

KShields Photography I’m a long time resident of Poulsbo, Washington who has been behind a camera traveling the world for decades. Thanks for taking the time to visit here.

I’ve raised a family, retired from two careers and now spend my time doing what I loved most - photography. A camera has led me to every continent, guided me to friendships that have lasted a lifetime, and become a true passion. One of my many goals is to find new and interesting ways to present an everyday scene as something intriguing and special. My compositions don’t have a common theme or jum

p out to be identified as a “K. Shields.” I enjoy experimenting with different styles and processing techniques as I learn them on my journey – a journey that will continue as long as I can lift up the tools of my trade and figure out the latest technology. If you’d like a print, have a question, or just want to share a story or memory that came to you while looking, drop me a line at [email protected]. I’d like to hear from you.

The sky wasn’t very dramatic at sunrise this morning, but fresh snow on the Olympics above Poulsbo was a welcome sight! The heavy line of clouds just over the ridge tells me Hood Canal was pretty socked in when I took this.

I’ve been thinking of warmer days ahead of us. Cannon Beach, OR is a favorite spot to enjoy time on the beach - especially in the morning. The gulls put on quite a show in front of Haystack Rock the morning I took this. I call it Chaos at Sunrise.

I go to the Skagit Valley every year to see the Snow Geese, daffodils & tulips. It won’t be long until daffodils will be in full bloom followed by the tulips a couple weeks later. Of all the many photos I’ve taken, this one of the geese arriving at sunrise from the Delta is a favorite. They covered the sky in waves like ribbons flowing in a breeze.

This article in “Skagit Talks” tells the story of the Snow Geese and is illustrated with several of my images. https://skagittalk.com/2022/03/22/the-amazing-journey-of-skagit-valley-snow-geese/

A portion of the Seattle skyline tonight, Feb 6th.

I try to capture many different things in unique ways. It doesn’t always work out, but I keep trying. I’m a Seattle Seahawk fan & wanted an image that showcased their going to the Super Bowl that included Seattle! This past Wednesday, I went from my home in Poulsbo to a dark & isolated place on Bainbridge Island where I could see the Seattle skyline. The weather cooperated, but I just couldn’t get the detail I wanted from that distance even with a 600mm lens. I came home & told my hubs that I thought the best way to get what I was hoping for was to walk on the Winslow ferry to get something closer, get off in Seattle & make a quick turnaround to ride it back to Bainbridge Island. It’s going to rain tonight, so last night was my best option. Dang ferry vibrates a lot & the wind & sway is challenging too. But … I was able to scout out a great spot when we arrived in Seattle that had all the elements I wanted and knew we wouldn’t be moving when we loaded to go back. So … I scooted directly to that spot when we boarded & got this shot. Single frame with the camera on the railing so I could get a sharper exposure. It’s been fun to see so many people enjoy it on Everything Washington and read the enthusiastic and supportive comments for our Seahawks! Go Hawks!

It was a cold foggy hike out to New Dungeness Lighthouse. The lighthouse is a 5 mile hike from the Refuge parking lot along the north side of the Dungeness Spit in Sequim. It’s easier to hike out on the beach at low tide. There are a lot of logs etc. to maneuver over & around at high tide. KShields Photography

I was up early and out the door for an appointment. On the way home, I noticed so many lovely spots come to life. The soft light coming through the fog all over Liberty Bay, the Surf Scoters flying low over the surface of the water in mass, calm water and fog circling the boats at the marinas … then the sky started to burst into color. I took a quick detour to a favorite spot and captured this on my iPhone. Such a nice way to start the day - so beautiful! Happy Thursday!
