On June 4, 2026, we stopped at Buffington Island Battlefield Memorial Park on our way home from a trip to Marietta, Ohio. At the time, we knew we were looking at a battlefield and an ancient mound, but we did not realize just how much history was layered into that small piece of ground. We had no idea that this had been part of Captain John Hunt Morgan's raid through Ohio, or that this was where his attempt to cross back over the Ohio River ultimately failed....

County Home Superintendent Dismissed After 14 Years

"G. C. (Christy) Johnson, for 14 years superintendent of the county home, was dismissed, effective Saturday, by the county commissioners on affidavits alleging chiefly that residents of the home were not fed well and that Mr. Johnson participated politically in the last election. As Grant Bradford of Brouse’s Run was named to succeed him, Mr. Johnson announced he will appeal to the civil service commission"Portsmouth and vicinity. (1937, March 28). Portsmouth Times, p. 42.

Infirmary Director Objects to Corporal Punishment

"County Infirmary Director Isaac Woodruff, in a conversation with a member of the Times staff recently, expressed himself strongly on the question of corporal punishment at the infirmary. Mr. Woodruff does not believe in it at all and thinks Superintendent and Mrs. Andre did very wrong in thrashing the woman inmate. He refused to sign the statement, whitewashing them, and says he will have more to say hereafter."Objects: Infirmary Director Woodruff criticises Supt. Andre. (1898, August 3). The Death of an Infant Son of Night Policeman John Goad

"An infant son of John Goad, night policeman of the Fifth Ward, nineteen months old, died last Tuesday morning, of a scrofulous affection in the head. The little fellow was playful and in fair health the evening before, but on awakening in the morning about 6 o’clock, a large pool of blood was found under the crib in which the child was lying, caused by the hemorrhage from some artery in the head, as the result of the terrible disease....

In August 1882, the infant son of Portsmouth night policeman John Goad died suddenly after a severe hemorrhage caused by disease. Fellow officers turned out in mourning as the child was laid to rest, marking a quiet but devastating loss for a public service family already struck by tragedy.
