What actually builds a brand?

For bike races and rural destinations, it’s probably not more advertising.

It’s telling stories people want to follow.

The people.
The place.
The landscape.
The experience.

That’s the power of content marketing.

It gives smaller organizations a chance to compete on story, not budget.

Over time, that builds familiarity, trust, identity, and visibility.

Slow? Yes.

But that’s also the point.

A practical guide for gravel events, rural towns, and small adventure brands on using content marketing to build brand identity and grow community.

You’re already doing the work of putting on a race.

Courses to plan. Permits to secure. Sponsors to manage. Volunteers to recruit. Riders to communicate with. A hundred details to keep moving.

And somewhere in there, you’re supposed to figure out what to even post on social media.

That’s why I created the Visibility Lab.

Each week, I share one practical lesson to help you create better content, market your race, and build visibility year-round.

Just practical ideas you can put to work.

Race directors, what social media metric matters the most to you?

Followers? Reach? Engagement? Shares? Saves? Video views? Website clicks? Or ultimately, registrations?

There are a lot of numbers competing for our attention every time we open a social media platform. Some tell us how many people saw something. Others tell us whether people actually cared enough to do something.

And, of course, the biggest number is usually how many people eventually register.

But I’m curious how race directors think about this.

When you’re looking at your social media analytics, what metric do you pay the most attention to?

And why?

I spend a lot of time at bike races with a camera in my hands.

Gravel. Mountain bike. Road.

And while I'm technically there to photograph the racing, some of the most interesting things I observe happen before the first rider rolls across the start line and long after the racing is over.

After photographing countless races this year, I've started noticing some common threads among the events that really stand out.

So I started asking ... "What makes a bike race memorable?"

In my latest article, I share five ingredients I've seen the most successful and memorable bike races get right.

What makes a great bike race? After photographing races across the country, I’ve identified five ingredients that create a memorable race experience.

Got back to Portland yesterday afternoon after spending the weekend in Flagstaff shooting Village Gravel.

Wow ... one of the most amazing gravel races I have ever been a part of. Absolutely spectacular.

Working frantically in between classes to get all of the photos edited. Coming soon ...

Want more registrations for your bike race?
Maybe the answer isn’t asking people to register more often.

Show them the course. Tell the stories. Introduce them to the community. Capture the experience. Give them a reason to wish they were already there.

Build the audience first.
Then ask for the registration.

Hopping on a plane tomorrow to head back to Village Gravel in Flagstaff for another year.

It’s easily one of my all-time favorite races to shoot. There’s something absolutely spectacular about circumnavigating the San Francisco Peaks on gravel roads, camera in hand.

Can’t wait to get back out there.
