the first day of school and i’m wondering where august went and also why it’s still so hot; the figs on the tree in the backyard are ripening and crepe myrtle everywhere are in glorious bloom and there is a little tinge of smoke in the air—pink light and heavy skies.
senior photos are happening and I have a few more spots for october if you need to commemorate the chapter known as: senior.
i’ve known this amazing kiddo for years and it was so much fun to make some art in the woods together: her beauty and her creativity and a whole lotta redwoods

and at this point in time, a trip to canada felt like a gentle thing. a kind thing. an extra soft place to land.
a bartender made us something with aperol and told us about his free health care then gave us a consolatory hug.
everything will be ok, he promised.
will it, though?
just stay here, he said—it’s a good place even though the winters are bleak as hell and send people into a special kind of madness.
but the montreal summer could not have been more welcoming with its colorful walls and dreamy warm nights and bustling pedestrian streets: everyone on bicycles speaking french giving high fives and sharing soft serve. the dream is alive in…canada?

temple wanderings and cups of bright green matcha and cats napping in front of ancient samurai houses and bowls of vending machine ramen and river walks with skies full of cherry blossom; green tea soft serve and tatami mat coffee houses and classical music bars and getting lost under orange lantern glow in narrow kyoto alleyways; early morning onsen under buddhist pines and stumbling in tiny wooden slippers and bright red kusama pumpkins by the shore and following the sound of chanting monks to the tops of miajima mountains; tokyo in the rain and silent shinkansen rides and tiny alters on forest floors and the smell of sakura in the air and mostly just so many arigatos, all the time & everywhere. thankyou japan for the most delightful, delicious, surprising, tender, ritualistic, wonderous sixteen days a girl wandering solo could ever imagine.
