if you’re worried your toddler won’t cooperate during newborn photos, stop.

they might not, and that’s totally fine.

we don’t need them happily snuggling the baby for two hours. we let them pop in and out. we play. we take breaks. we photograph the baby while they go do their thing, and when they’re interested again, we bring them back in.

sometimes they want to inspect every tiny toe. sometimes they want to give 47 kisses. sometimes they want absolutely nothing to do with any of us and would rather jump off the furniture.

we roll with all of it.

the goal isn’t to make your older child or children behave perfectly for a newborn session. it’s to photograph your family as it actually is in this brand new season, including the tiny person figuring out what it means to suddenly be the big one.

there’s this tiny little bubble of time after your baby is born, before you pack everything up and take them home.

the hospital bracelets are still on. bassinet next to your bed. you have no idea what time it is. you’re exhausted and your heart feels like it’s doubled in size and is living outside of you. you can’t stop staring at this brand new person you’ve been waiting to meet.

it’s such an intimate sliver of time. being invited into this space and trusted to preserve a little piece of it is something i don’t take lightly.

if you’re expecting a baby and want these first few days documented, i would love to be there ✨

if i could go back in time and tell my 29 year old, newly pregnant self one thing, it would be to book the photos.

and i’d do all of it. maternity, those first hours in the hospital, newborn photos at home, the milestones throughout that first year.

i would trade every fancy baby gadget and piece of gear i was gifted and barely used for photos of that time. i wouldn’t rely on a partner, parents, friends, or myself to document it.

i wish i could see myself pregnant with her the way i photograph other moms now. i wish i had photos of myself holding her in that hospital room. i wish i could see what we looked like together when she was impossibly tiny, and then six months old, and then one. because i remember it, obviously. but also… i don’t. not the way i thought i would.

i can’t go back and do it differently for myself, but if you’re expecting a baby now, let me be the person who tells you what i wish someone had told me:

book the photos. and get in them. 🤍
