Happy World Photography Day , celebrate every day :)

Happy World Photography Day - an annual, worldwide celebration of the art, craft, science and history of photography.

But why was this particular day of the year chosen to celebrate photography?

Because August the 19th, in 1839, was the day that photography went 'open source'

It was on that day that the French Government purchased the rights to Louis Daguerreโ€™s photographic process โ€“ and immediately put them into the public domain, thus allowing others to copy, alter, practice, re-imagine, perfect, and learn from his process โ€“ the true birth of photography for the masses.

In return Daguerre received a generous, life-long pension, and a well deserved place in history.

Wherever you and your camera end up today - have fun!.................

Split second preserved forever, the power of authentic photography has no equal. That is why any recreations, mock ups or AI fantasies of the world around us just does not cut it.

On this day in photographic history - May the 6th 1937 - the death of the Hindenburg and the birth of photojournalism.

Eighty-eight years ago today the German passenger Zeppelin 'Hindenburg' - pride of pre-war Germany, explodes and burns while attempting a mooring in the USA.

The accident killed thirty-five of those on board - thirteen passengers and twenty-two crewmen (there were 36 passengers and 61 crewmen on the airship) an individual on the ground also died.

Belarus born photographer Sam Shere was one of those present and took this image on his Speed Graphic camera.

This is widely regarded as the first disaster to have been extensively covered photographically, and helped give birth to the notion of photojournalism.

It is also, of course, and image that has been extensively re-used, adapted, and parodied. (the cover of Led Zeppelin's debut album being a, prime example)

Will you miss them? Wedding traditions that are slowly being forgotten Image: Aranprime Love, family, and centuries-old customs. Not all of those traditions are making it to the altar anymore, though. Some were born from superstition, others from practicality, and a few from trends that have, well,....

I do so love the before after, then now, rephotographed scenes even if original is a painting pre dating photography :) It is a challenge to get in the same spot and trying to replicate the angle, the lighting and the lens that was used back in the day.

It is incredible what story two pictures, put side by side, can tell us. And what a difference decades or hundreds of years can make to our landscapes, architecture, and overall history. History, Photography & Digital Art

Happy (posthumous) birthday Kodachrome - gone but not forgotten...

On this day, the 15th of April, 1935 Kodak introduced the first practical subtractive colour process film - Kodachrome - based on the research of professional musicians, and keen photographers, Leopold Godowsky and Leonard Mannes.

Sadly a slice of photographic history that will never return. ...
