Today was quite a special day, one to be remembered. Having the chance to photograph one of football's greatest players of all time, Lionel Andrés Messi. Unfortunately, our couldn't upset the current champions, , but still, living the experience covering Timbers away was incredible.

Rosie Casals headlined the panel during tonight’s screening of “Give Me the Ball” at the first International Women’s Sports Film Festival, held in Portland, OR. “Give Me the Ball” is a portrait of tennis legend and equal rights champion Billie Jean King and the group of women athletes who completely changed the world of women's tennis and women's sports. Casals was part of the original Dollar Contract that took women’s tennis from an amateur side job to the men’s game into a pro sport. Casals was one of Billie Jean King's top rivals on the court, but off the court, they all took on the patriarchy as one team and changed everything.

I originally photographed this during the pandemic, as clouds from nearby megafires were creeping over Portland. What followed were record pollution numbers that made the evergreen city of Roses the most polluted place in the world for a few days. It was a preview of an end-of-days movie, absolutely frightening times. Fast forward to today, the image made it to The Nation Magazine for a book review on "God and S*x", a fiction work that mixes romance, climate change, spirituality, and other existentialist themes.

When I shot the photo, I remember thinking about the vibrant colors, the intense red sky over the Celtic cross at Mt. Calvary Cemetery overlooking wet Portland, and the romanticism of the impending doom brought by such bright, beautiful colors. Apparently, Raymond's novel and my photo were meant to meet.

The article has a paywall, but I'm definitely considering the read, if only because of this connection.

In God and S*x, Jon Raymond has recontextualized timeless novelistic questions—on faith and love—in an era of environmental collapse.

Happy Easter! For many, it was yesterday, for a chunk of Christians extends through Monday, for me, it was Saturday's Egg Hunt at Cook Park for . Now a tradition, it's probably one of my most challenging action shoots of the year. I know it sounds shocking to say this when I shoot professional sports, but I wish my pro teams had the intensity and commitment of these kids chasing their candy and their little presents inside the eater eggs! Jokes aside, it is such a fun event, and I am happy to have been photographing it for at least half a decade.
