Day 32/261 Acorn Woodpeckers
LOVE! Polygynandry! In this mating system, you have multiple breeding males and females together. They all lay their eggs together and everyone takes turns incubating all of them. Nonbreeding offspring also help take care and feed nestlings. It's like one big commune.

Day 30/261 Wilson's Phalarope
LOVE! I love phalaropes cause they are the kings- nay, queens of polyandry. This is kinda like the inverse of the scumbag burrowing owl that has a side chick. The female phalarope will mate with a male, lay eggs and then leave the male to take care of the nest as they go on to the next male to sucker and cucker him into raising some more babies. Another unique feature of phalaropes is that the female is the more colorful of the duo. This also correlates to the male being more drab, which is a common characteristic of a ground-nesting incubator. Birds are fun.

Cackling Goose ➡️ Snow Goose ➡️ Snowy Egret ➡️ Great Egret ➡️ Great-Tailed Grackle
From Goose to Grackle in 5 easy steps. What a hoot. The most ubiquitous bird in Phoenix and I love a ubiquitous bird. Please don't make me hike 5 miles to see you. Just be everywhere. Thank you great-tailed Grackle for being loud and proud. Last picture is purely for illustration purposes of the name sake Great tail. Just look at thing. Like a damn rooster.
Did you have fun this week?

Back to back featured Myrtle Beach birding posts, it's really an egret/heron paradise there.

Shoutout to my friend who somehow likes each of my posts within seconds of me posting them but has never told me his favorite bird.

Cackling Goose ➡️ Snow Goose
Day 2 of the daisy chain. Can we figure out how this works? Any guesses what's next? Anyone want to have an actual dialogue with me? I'm so lonely. All I have are my goose friends and they bite me. Once every few years, these guys will show up at the park where I work and hang out with the Canada geese. I like to say hi when that happens.

Day 24/261 Cackling Goose
This week's theme is Daisy Chain; one bird will lead to another by name. It'll make sense.
Hey don't you mean Canada Goose!?!? Nope, the cackling goose is a smaller, tinier-billed relative of the canada goose. Not nearly as cobra chicken as a Canada Goose. Just look at that smile in slide 2.
Have you ever heard of a cackling goose?
