I hear couples say they want “candid photos” all the time — and almost every one of them is nervous about the same thing.

They don’t want to look stiff.
They don’t want to feel awkward.
They don’t want photos that don’t feel like them.

So here are 3 things I wish people knew about candid photography:
1. “Candid” doesn’t mean no direction.
True documentary photography is hands-off. But what most couples actually want is guidance that helps them feel natural and comfortable. That’s the job — you’re not supposed to figure it out on your own.
2. Most candid photos are still intentionally directed.
The effortless images you see on Instagram and Pinterest didn’t just happen. They’re created through movement, prompts, timing, and a photographer who knows how to read people — and then gives you space to be yourselves.
3. Everyone is nervous. Truly everyone.
No one walks into a session feeling like a model. My first move is usually simple: pause, take a deep breath, and reset. From there, I tailor the direction to you. Comfort is what creates real moments.

Candid photography isn’t about being a free spirit.
It’s about feeling like yourself.

If you’ve ever worried about feeling awkward in photos, you’re not alone — and you’re exactly who this kind of photography is for.

Wind-tangled hair, sandy coats, and that quiet kind of joy that only the Oregon Coast gives you.
This Seaside, Oregon couples session felt slow, intimate, and a little wild in the best way. Fog rolling in, waves crashing behind us, and two people completely wrapped up in each other.

If you’re dreaming of an Oregon Coast engagement session, Seaside OR couples photos, or a laid-back coastal love story that feels natural and unposed, this is your sign. I photograph couples who want movement, connection, and real moments over stiff poses.
