Saturday morning at Cathedral Park with Kelsey and Adrian, the kind of gray that makes everything feel like fall. This one was moody in the best way.

These two are quiet and sweet, not the type to perform for a camera, which honestly made for one of my favorite kinds of sessions. We spent as much time talking as we did shooting. Kelsey and I ended up comparing curly hair stories early on, and that was it, ice broken, no more wondering what to do with our hands. The park was quiet, the sky was this heavy dark gray, and it all just felt calm. Cozy, even. The kind of morning you don't want to rush through.

Thank you both for trusting me with your morning. This is exactly why I love what I do.

Want senior portraits in Oregon that aren't in a field?

We spent an afternoon at the Portland Art Museum instead, and it changed everything about how these turned out. Good light, interesting textures, something to look at besides a camera lens. Turns out when you give someone an actual environment to exist in, they stop posing and start just... being a person in a cool place.

No forced smiles. No "now look here and tilt your chin." Just someone who got to be a little artsy, a little moody, completely themselves.

If you're the parent trying to find a photographer whose senior portraits don't look like everyone else's, this is the kind of session I love doing. Happy to talk through where we could go, the Art Museum is one of my favorite spots, but there are plenty of others around Portland too.

Here’s the thing nobody believes until they’re in it... you don’t have to know how to pose for your photos to look good.

I give you somewhere to start, I like to start simple- a little direction, a prompt, something to do with your hands so you’re not standing there wondering. But my favorite stuff is the in-between. The laughing, the leaning in, the way two people who have known each other for years interact and love one another. That shows up on its own, once you stop thinking about the camera.

That’s the job. Not making you perform some weird version of you that doesn’t exist outside of this moment. Just giving you enough room to get comfortable and that’s when the real version of you shows up

If “I’m not photogenic” is the thing that’s kept you from booking a session, I’d love to prove you wrong. My inbox is always open. 🤍

POV: you’re convinced you’re not photogenic

I hear this from almost every single person I photograph, and almost every single time, it turns out to be completely untrue by the end of the session.

Being photogenic isn’t actually a skill you need. It’s not some innate talent some people have and others don’t. Most of the time, “I’m not photogenic” just means “no one’s ever given me something to do besides stand here and smile.” Give someone a real moment, a partner to laugh with, a direction instead of a pose, and the awkwardness just isn’t there anymore.

So if you’ve written yourself off as a bad photo subject, I’d bet money you just haven’t been photographed the right way yet.

I’m an artist. Also, apparently, a professional shouter who yells “SO CUTE” a lot. Both things can be true.

These are ten of my favorite frames from a recent couples session here in Portland, OR the kind of photos that happen when two people stop worrying about the camera and just exist next to each other for a minute.

Kelsey + Adrian at Cathedral Park 🌫️🌉

Moody September morning, the Gothic arches of the St. Johns Bridge towering above us, and two of the sweetest, mellowest humans I’ve had the pleasure of photographing.

I’m pretty sure their favorite part of the session was watching me run around yelling “AWHHH SO CUTE!!” like a proud, slightly unhinged aunt. They laughed at me the whole time, and those laughs are some of my favorite photos from the gallery. 🤎

Cathedral Park is one of my favorite spots in Portland for couples. You get the moody bridge, the river, and plenty of open grass to wander around on, so it feels more like hanging out and exploring than standing in one spot posing. Those gray September mornings are chef’s kiss.

You’re putting way too much pressure on your engagement photo location.

Don’t get me wrong, the International Rose Test Garden is gorgeous. Flowers everywhere, dreamy little pockets of light, and plenty of places to wander around together. I will NEVER complain about photographing my clients here!

But the location isn’t what makes your photos feel like you. You don’t need to hunt down some secret, never-before-photographed place or choose the most impressive backdrop you can find. The good stuff happens when you get comfortable enough to stop thinking about the camera and start paying attention to each other.

That’s where I come in. I’ll help with the location, give you direction when you need it, start you off simple, and keep things moving so you’re not standing there wondering, “Okay…what the hell do I do with my hands?” You don’t have to show up knowing how to pose or perform your relationship for me.

Pick somewhere you genuinely like. Somewhere that feels good to be in. Then come hang out, love on your person, be a little weird, and let me worry about making it all look beautiful.

So your fiancé hates having their picture taken…

First of all, they’re not alone

Not everyone gets excited about spending an hour in front of a camera. Some people hear “engagement photos” and immediately start wondering how many times I’m going to make them fake laugh at each other.

Good news: i’ve never asked a couple to fake laugh

They don’t need to know how to pose. They don’t need to suddenly become super affectionate for the camera or love PDA. And they definitely don’t need to pretend they’re having the BEST TIME EVER for me.

I’ll start you off simple. I’ll tell you where to stand, what to do with your hands, where to look, alllll that stuff that feels weird when there’s suddenly a camera pointed at you.

Then we’ll move around. We’ll talk. You’ll get to focus more on each other and less on me.

And usually? That’s when things start feeling a whole lot less like Getting Your Picture Taken and more like hanging out with your person while some lady occasionally yells, “AHHHH, SO PRETTY!” from behind a camera.

Your partner doesn’t have to love having their photo taken for you to have fun and get beautiful engagement photos.

They just need a photographer who knows what to do with someone who doesn’t. 🖤

POV: you told me you’re awkward in photos

Okay, cool. It’s my job to figure that part out.

You do not need to show up to your session knowing how to pose, what to do with your hands, where to look, or how to casually frolic through a field like you’ve been modeling your whole life.

That’s my job.

I love to start simple when it comes to posing.

I’ll tell you where to stand, what to do, and give you enough direction that you’re not standing there thinking, “Soooo… what now?”

And then we move. We walk around. You look at each other. I say “give em another kiss. Ahhhhh, so pretty!!!”

That’s when we get to the good stuff.

You don’t have to perform for beautiful photos. You just have to show up as yourselves. I’ll help with the rest. 🖤
