Here's one reason family photos keep getting pushed to "next year":

We're waiting for the perfect time.

When everyone's schedule calms down.
When we figure out outfits.
When there's a milestone.
When the weather is perfect.
When life feels a little less chaotic.

And somehow... another year goes by.

It's one of the reasons I love the idea of making family photography an ANNUAL tradition.

When you already know you're going to photograph your family each year, you don't have to keep deciding whether this particular year is "important enough."

It already is.

And if something unexpected happens midyear—a visit from grandparents, a new puppy, two suddenly missing front teeth—you can decide that's worth documenting too.

That's part of why I created the Yearbook Club: to make regular family photography easier and take some of the "when should we do this?" pressure away.

Because there really isn't a perfect time.

There's just the family you have right now. 💛

Want to know the secret to great fall family photos?

It's not perfectly coordinated outfits.

It's not getting your kids to behave perfectly.

And it is DEFINITELY not making sure everyone looks at the camera and smiles at the exact same time. 😉

It's showing up ready to enjoy your people.

Fall sessions should feel like spending time together on a beautiful PNW evening. Snuggle your kids. Laugh with your partner. Let the siblings be silly. Wrap everyone up in a favorite blanket if it's chilly.

And if there's a wrinkle in someone's shirt or a sibling squabble five minutes before you arrive?

Let. It. Go. 💛

I'll handle the photos. Your job is to relax, love on your family, and have fun together.

Those perfectly imperfect interactions are where so many of my favorite images happen anyway.

"But my teenager does NOT want to take family photos."

Fair. 😂 (I have a 13 and 15 yo...so I get you!)

So let's NOT plan a session that makes them miserable.

Older kids can actually have a LOT of fun with family photos when we stop treating them like little kids and give them some ownership over the experience.

Let your teen help choose:

👟 What they wear
🏙️ Where we go
🎸 Whether we incorporate something they're into
📸 How they feel comfortable being photographed

Maybe we explore a colorful Portland neighborhood instead of heading to a park.

Maybe their current style becomes part of the visual story.

Maybe we give them space for individual portraits that actually feel COOL.

Family photography changes as your kids get older. That's a good thing.

Your teen isn't the same kid they were at 7.

Let's create photographs of the person they're becoming. ❤️

Family photos don't always need a field, a park, or a perfectly planned backdrop.

Sometimes all we need is a city sidewalk. 🏙️✨

That's the idea behind Moments in the City, my monthly portrait series celebrating the colorful, interesting, sometimes unexpected corners of Portland.

Each month, I'll choose a different location and creative concept. Then we'll spend 10–15 relaxed minutes exploring together while I create portraits inspired by your family AND the space around us.

Think colorful walls. Interesting architecture. Beautiful light. Graphic lines. And all those little interactions that happen when your family is simply walking and exploring together.

No elaborate plan.
No long photo session.
No pressure to pose perfectly.

Just a little creative adventure together. 📸

📸 School Picture Day is coming! So... how do you help your child feel ready without accidentally putting MORE pressure on them?

My biggest tip?

Don't tell them they need to smile.

I would much rather photograph your child's genuine, serious expression than a stiff "cheese!" smile that doesn't feel anything like them.

A few more ways to prep your student:

✨ Let them know Picture Day will be quick and FUN.
✨ Tell them their photographer is pretty silly and may tell a few jokes. 😉
✨ Choose comfortable clothes they actually like wearing.
✨ Give hair, faces, and glasses a quick check before school.
✨ Let them know they can talk to me, ask questions, and be themselves.
✨ Most importantly, remind them there is no "perfect" way to take a school photo!

I want kids to arrive feeling comfortable and knowing exactly what to expect so we can capture the big laughs, quiet smiles, thoughtful looks, missing teeth, and everything else that makes them THEM. 💛

And preparation can look a little different depending on whether you have a preschooler, elementary student, middle schooler, or high schooler.

🍂 School is starting (or already started!), fall activities are filling the calendar, and somehow we're heading straight toward the busiest few months of the year.

A few years ago, a longtime client reached out to me with a very specific reason for wanting family photos:

Her son had lost BOTH of his front teeth. 🦷🦷

That was it.

No birthday.
No holiday card deadline.
No major family announcement.

She just looked at that giant gap-toothed grin and realized, "This isn't going to last very long."

So we photographed it.

A few years later, when her younger child reached the same stage, we did it again.

And I LOVE this approach to family photography.

You don't have to wait until something traditionally "important" happens.

Sometimes two missing teeth are important enough. ❤️
