Hi everyone! here with a gentle reminder that tomorrow is the first of our two gatherings to kick off the Portland Darkroom Book Club with Sally Mann’s new book, Art Work.

I’m trying to get a headcount for snacks and chai (a chai count, if you will :) ), so please comment or DM if you’re planning to join!

We’ll meet twice this month — Tuesday, October 14, and Tuesday, October 28, from about 6–8 pm at the Darkroom.

Here’s the plan:

October 14:
We’ll dive into the first half of the book and share any related or inspired work — pieces connected to Sally’s central themes of family, landscape, love, the American South, memory, mortality, alt process, and history. We’ll also watch Blood Ties (the 30-minute 1994 Sally Mann documentary).

October 28:
We’ll continue the conversation, share more work, and close with a relaxed group viewing of What Remains (the 1 hr 20 min 2005 documentary), followed by a short discussion on what book or topic we’d like to explore next as a group.

These evenings are meant to be cozy and low-key — open to both members and non-members — so feel free to bring snacks, drinks, or a friend. I’ll also bring the copies I have of Sally’s photobooks for everyone to look through.

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon!
