The soft light after the sun went below the trees was perfect for photographing this beautiful spot. I wish I could have stayed longer, but after this image I rushed up the trail to capture my blue hour foreground for a Milky Way image from above the falls. It was a lovely evening with talented friends Maricel Quesada Jara and Michelle Jacquemet .

While I was in this area last month, I didn’t visit this beautiful spot because I knew I had unprocessed images from a year ago. While that hasn’t stopped me from returning to Death Valley many times despite having thousands of images from past trips, somehow it made a difference for this location! Anyway, here’s an image from June 2025. I photographed this in the mid-afternoon, a time I usually avoid due to harsh light, thanks to a lucky few minutes when the sun went behind a cloud.

New work from last Friday! Click or tap to see the full image. I hiked up here hopeful that I’d get a Milky Way image despite the clouds. It did end up peeking through a gap in the clouds, but it turned out that the sunset was absolutely stunning, and I liked this even more! I first photographed this scene handheld, but returned with my tripod for a proper focus stack to do it justice. Glad I did.
