Caesura - pausing to reconnect with the ephemeral & eternal in nature As I bathe in nature in the forest and my garden, I capture moments of beauty to share with others

A plethora of brightly colored mushrooms at Cape Perpetua on the central Oregon coast today. I particularly love the blue one.

I have created several new all-PNW native plant gardens in my yard. This one used to be under concrete along our driveway. I planted several native shrubs, a small tree (serviceberry) and berries (thimble berry and golden currant). To protect them and add color as they grew, I also planted native perennials like blanket flower, gum w**d, black-eyed Susan’s and common mafia. All are producing great seed heard which are being devoured by flicks of very happy finches! Enjoy!

We hit the beach north of Cape Blanco lighthouse at low tide today. The rocks are quite different than those at Bandon just to the N. Many are green and more are a shiny smooth black with wrinkles, resulting in black sand. Because the water is shallower for a much greater distance than at Bandon, the sea anemones appear to cover themselves with sand, even pulling it over their mouths. I assume this is because they are out of water longer than their cousins who live under rock overhangs. There were also countless snails from the size of a pin to 1” long. Many abandoned snail shells became hermit crab homes.

I had the wonderful experience today of getting to down done tube watching 2 or 3 juvenile barred owlets. They’re not native to the PNW but they’re still so cool to watch! The one grooming itself kept on calling out to its mom who had flown away right before I arrived.

We hiked the Hobbit Trail to Heceta Head Lighthouse S of Yachats on the central OR coast today. The hike was under 2 miles each way but had 900’ elevation gain (that would be up, up, up, down, down then up, up then down). Consequently we were soon left behind by the 2 younger generations. But one of the great benefits of being older & by necessity slower, is we have time to really see where we are going, including looking straight up!

Seal Rock beach and Cape Perpetua on the central OR coast in spectacular weather! It truly feels hot midday and afternoon in the sun. It’s my first time seeing sea anemones eating crabs & little shrimp as well as finding a rice pool eel baby! Not many star fish tho the wasting disease that has killed so many in recent years seems to be easing up.

I got 6 free pollywogs from our local water garden store. The first has transitioned from tadpole to frog. It’s a Pacific tree frog and will grow to 2” long (it is about 1/2” right now) & hopefully serenade me in the near future, that is if this year’s raccoon kits don’t catch & eat it! If I ever get a glimpse of its throat, I will be able to determine its s*x. The males (which are smaller than the females) have a dark spot on their throats. Some of the pollywogs may be endangered northern red-legged frogs, which are even smaller than the tree frogs. 5 more tadpoles to go!

I watched a young pileated woodpecker dine on a snag in the Arboretum this morning! He wasn’t phased by hikers passing feet from his meal!
