Lucky Cheetah for an engagement feels like a cheat code.

I’ve been really leaning into direct flash lately.
It’s been pushing me to think differently about light, about space, about how much we can play instead of chasing what’s expected from engagement photos.

This session felt like a turning point for that. We spent the afternoon drinking champagne, talking about their first date, experimenting, laughing a lot, and just letting the energy build naturally in front of the camera.

And honestly, being in a place like made it way too easy to make something special — velvet couches, reds and golds accents, candlelight, cheetahs everywhere and to top it off a space that actually invites you to create.

So you want your wedding photos to feel candid?

But here’s the thing, you can’t force candidness. It’s not something you can do with ridged posing or make happen on the spot. It’s a mentality that gets cultivated through deep understanding and connection. Through us bonding and building familiarity, to you learning about your dreams and vision for the day, by leaning into what makes you you, and by most importantly being full present in the moment. These are all skills and topics we practice in depth leading up to your big day so that we can capture moments that bring you right back to the feeling of the day.

I love seeing when my couples put extra touches to include their friends and family into the wedding.

Your love story has so many people in it. Countless people who supported yall as your love grew and watched you two become what life long best friends. Finding ways to honor that in your day is a beautiful way to recognize how much you appreciate all the people in your life. Having your people stand up at the aisle with you, bringing your parents up to the alter to drop off the rings, having a first look with your dad, or planning a special moment to smoke ci**rs with your boys. These are all amazing ways to celebrate the people you love throughout this beautiful day!

Can I open up for a second?

I haven’t talked about it much but this has been a big season over here at Shado of a Rose, or SOAR as I often call it in my head. This was my first year running the business alone. I ended up doing only a few less weddings this year than last and i did even more smaller shoots than I did when I ran the company with someone else. It’s been wild and hard to take on double the work, but nice to make the extra money and realize just how capable I am. In an almost spiteful attempt to validate my worth I threw myself into the business since my break up. I didn’t want to let anything fall through the cracks.

Even something like posting on Instagram which I struggled to do for years suddenly became something I was doing everyday. But as this summer wore on and the work piled up I started to slow down and I haven’t been posting as much on here. It’s been important for me to recognize my potential for burnout. And as I healed in my personal life, I had to find healthy ways to redefine my work life balance. And luckily the season is coming to an end and I’m really excited to show everyone what I’ve created with my couples this year.

It feels like I really stepped into myself as an artist and business owner the last few months. I feel more connected to my photography than ever, I’m finding couples that are perfect matches for me, and I know I’m creating an experience that adds so much joy to peoples lives. It’s taken me a long time to get to where I am now, but after so many years of chipping away at this thing it’s amazing to really feel proud of what I’ve accomplished.

I’ve been having some fun recently with color grading!

For the most part I’m a true to color editor. Sure I’ll play around a bit, but I’ve always been wary of falling into a filtered look or trend. And to be honest a part of stance used to be anchored in a lack of knowledge in color theory. But as I’ve grown and developed my editing style I’ve been finding the time to play and develop different stylistic looks. Engagement sessions are a great opportunity for this. After doing my typical edit for this shoot I got swept up in an idea and landed on this more vintage dreamy edit. I’ve found it’s important to keep pushing myself and taking creative risks. I never know where they might lead and I love adding more skills to my tool belt.

My job becomes quite easy when I work with couples as in love as these two are!

Every couple is different, some people need a lot of help with posing, some don’t, some people express their love and personality in subtle ways, while others it’s big and bold, some people’s love is laughter, but others it’s tears. So I’ve found a lot of my job comes down to listening, and not just with my ears, but in visual cues I get from my couples. And sometimes I get real lucky and I’ll have clients like these two where all I really needed to do was set the scene and they would fill it easily with their love and personality.

What kind of story are you trying to tell?

This is a question I like to ask all the couples I work with. And it’s one that I find to be at the heart of my work. I know what you’re thinking, the story is love, but I like to dig deeper than that. How do you two express your love with each other? What makes you two happy? What are the things that make you you. It’s by digging deeper and truly connecting with my clients that we can create imagery that not only shows off their love but makes them feel truly connected to the people they are.
